TR: Crater Lakes, CO 6/29/08 (many photos)
I'm starting to get a lot of weird looks from people when I tell them I'm going, or just went skiing. It's summer, they inform me. "Is there still snow up there?" they ask. My response always is, have you looked at the mountains lately?
Dave, hippy_prophet, and I headed up to the cirque surrounding Crater Lakes, just above the East Portal of the Moffat Tunnel in the Indian Peaks to find out what sort of goodness was still skiable. Lots of options, as it turns out.
This trip wasn't just about the skiing though. The hike in was beautiful and worth the effort in and of itself. Water features:
Turns were earned:

But the views didn't suck:

There were four or five different lines that were still in, all pretty steep, but with varying degrees of difficulty in terms of entry and technicality. We picked one of the easier options:

Although there was a bit of exposure due to some rocks and small cliffs below:

A view of the cirque; our line drops the second snowfield from the left:

Then it was my turn:

A look back. We skied directly down the middle of the photo, then traversed looker's right to ski the longer apron towards the lake.

Not content, we decided to make it a two-for-one. We had spotted this on the way up:

Getting there was a little work:

But the skiing was worth it. Dave:

A great line to top off the day. Back to summer on the hike out:
Another great trip with great folks. It's been a damn fun season.
