That looks like the least amount of fun possible to have on a mountain bike. I push my bike sometimes, but at least there is a pay off! Why just bring it as luggage on a cross country suffer fest?

The point was to complete a cool wilderness loop. A bike was the best way to get into the park on human power, and to get out the Stampede Trail. One of the best things about this state is the amount of truly open wilderness - the feeling of being way out there is pretty interesting and addicting. It is sooooo expansive - truly amazing. There was a huge payoff for me in the form of smiling after a great trip with the knowledge that we had an adventure, created new relationships, pushed our bodies, and expanded our concepts of the universe.

That was a fun read. Thanks. It brought back a lot of memories. I lived in Denali for about 5 mos. in the mid 80's. Part of the time at Toklat and part at Kantishna at the very end of the road. My understanding is that the whole park has become more of a tourist destination. Tourist didn't get off the buses when I was there.

It's hard to explain how magnificent that place is and the scale of everything. Having lived there, I have a greater appreciation of your trip.
