Thread: Subarus are hippy cars?

More impressive is my V70R averages 22-23mpg with a conservative 275hp. Long trips I can average between 24-28mpg depending on speed and load. As previously noted, a subie wagon fully loaded with 4 people and ski gear and a 170hp engine = slug. For a few MPG, I will stick with the 275hp that is easily chipped to 315 hp with apparent mpg improvements when driven normally.

There is no fucking way you're getting 22mpg on a chipped Volvo... unless you're going downhill with a tailwind.
Surprisingly I got ~25mpg in my A4 with a Thule Atlantis 1800 on it this weekend.

30-31? Is that avg. for city/highway? I hope so. Like I said, with my old Nissan I got 32 highway, and I didn't think that was particularly special. If I get 26 with the Suby for highway driving I feel like I'm doing pretty well.
Like I said, I guess it's just the way it is with a heavier, AWD car, but when my mileage starts bottoming out at 15 in the city it's depressing.[quote][//quote]

I'll try to find the article, but as I recall it reading ~ those were overall averages. Each of them were only getting between 30 to 31mpg. Of course, the UPPER end of that scale were Hybrids, getting about 45mpg overall.
It was just interesting to note that of the vehicles they listed, they were all FWD compact cars, but then you look at for example, an Outback ~ and for the couple mpg's difference....Well - not bad, I say. We've got to pause and ask ourselves: How much clean air do we need? ~ Lee Iacocca

Folks who judge others' characters by what they drive probably want to be judged by what they drive - a character with questionable flaws such as a superficial attitude toward others and an unwarranted connection to material goods.
ps. My Outback has realized 24.9 mpg over the first 10,000 miles. That is a real number.

Heh - that vehicle is solely responsible for Subaru's biggest May in 22 years. 11th consecutive month of sales growth.
Meanwhile, Ford has already given up the idea that '08 could see a return to profitability & GM's shareholders are waiting for the other shoe to drop. (Now that they're finally able to BUILD them again, nobody WANTS 'em!)We've got to pause and ask ourselves: How much clean air do we need? ~ Lee Iacocca

Tippster, I wouldn't lie about this. My trip computer for the current tank of gas shows a 24 mpg avg. That is more freeway and some city driving. Going to Mammoth, which is 800 miles round trip, I will avg 25 mpg at 75-80mph with two people in the car. Loaded with 4 people and a roof rack I drop to 22 mpg, but I am usually flying too
My car isn't chipped, but many have noted at www.swedespeed.com that a chipped R, driven normally, actually picks up a mile or 2 per gallon I don't get it but the explanation is there if you want to search.
When I go 65 mph on the freeway, I get 27 mpg. I just can't stand driving like a granny. If I could, I would buy the subie wagon with the 170 hp engineLast edited by liv2ski; 06-09-2008 at 04:31 PM.

Driving 80 mph around SLC I've gotten between 25-28 mpg on my last three tanks, which last over a week. In my WRX.
In related news, the Subie dealer has the STI cat-back exhaust on sale for $333. Anybody wanna give me a loan?

There are plenty who own them (the trucks) without being solid contractors just yet....
