    Yampa Canyon TR

Got invited on a Yampa trip a few weeks ago and had to say yes. Even though it was witha bunch of old timer river runners. Turned out they were a hilarious group of older guys, with the exception of one. You never know what to expect when your putting on with (mostly)strangers. We put on on May 6-lasted five days and went 71miles. We had one class IV(one old timer flipped) and a couple III's maybe. Awesome float. One of the best trips in the west, and a pretty tough trip to get on. It was also at flood stage while we were on it. Huge logs and wood debris, tires, carcasses floating by us. It was 16K CFS on our last day thru Split mountain.

Maybell, where i bought all the food that i forgot.

    Above Anderson hole camp

Steak and potato on night one. That salad was so good.

    Above Harding Hole.

Nice sequence of a 16footer disappearing in Warm Springs rapid, class IV. Water was huge. This was where one raft in our party flipped and took a long swim.

Hanging out on this little island with the wife of the guy who flipped. The rest of the party was upstream dealing with the raft...

Notice this beach we were on.......

    The next morning...

Approaching the confluence with the Green and Lodore Canyon. Steamboat rock....

    Steamboat rock....

The crystal clear waters of Jones creek merging with the flooded, brown Green River(Yampa).......

Paddling thru Split Mountain Canyon on the last day,at flood stage....

    Wild,mangy mustangs in Utah....

On the way back, still winter up at Cameron Pass. They received a nice dump while i was gone.....

One of these days I (or one of my buddies) will score a permit. Looks beautiful, thanks for sharing.

Yeah,i never thought i'd get on the Yampa. Luckily i got invited on by some older folk. And it helps to not have a steady job. I only knew the one guy(that invited me) but it was still worth it. These old timers were pretty funny and still knew how to party.

    Very nice.

Just like the guidebook claims, your chances of getting a permit on that stretch are about as high as spotting a dinosaur.

But wait a second, weren't you pre-permit season? I think it starts around memorial day, though I could be mistaken.

If so, then that's just good planning on it being a big snow year.

TWO WEEKS and we're on the Dolores!

This is what i thought too. I was asking the guy in charge what the deal was and he said it was still permitted at that time, which was the 6th(day we put on.) But everything i've read said permit time doesn't start til the 2nd monday in May. I'm still confused. He said he called for two hours straight trying to get it.
