I want a road bike but I know nothing about them

I want to get an old road bike for tooling around but I have no knowledge of such things.

For mountain bikes, I like sizes with about a 23" top tube. How does this map to roadie sizes?

The wheels on road bikes are larger than mountain bikes?

The components are totally different? What is the XT level equivalent?

How does geometry matter on a road bike?

    Thanks!

    road bike wheels are larger

XT level in shimano terms is probably ultegra

and the only way to size a road bike correctly is to go try lots of them!
