I am looking to head to portugal in the summer to go surfing perhaps, what kind of waves can I expect ? Between June-Aug when is the best time to go there.

Any recommendations on southern spain while I'm at it ?

i surfed portugal quite a few years ago and loved it. peniche/baleal area, waves were mellow (no bigger than head high) but plenty of point breaks. the locals were actually really cool and took me to a few "secret" breaks, i think it helped that i was there in the off season (november) where there were zero tourists around (it was cold - cold air & water). just south of peniche is "supertubos" which is an insane barrell wave breaking in knee deep (or less) water. i'd say summer month will be crowded and small waves, like the rest of europe. sept/oct are probably the best months due to storm patterns. winter months are too damn cold (for me).

southern spain - no idea but i think it's better for wind/kitesurfing than surfing. you might think about going north instead to galicia or the basque coast on up to biarritz (france). there are some MONSTER waves up there when it's on.
