First Impressions?

So this place is sorta social, demented and sad, but social. Right?

Don't remember when I came across the board on PMag, but I lurked there for a while, getting a feal for the people and the board, and seeing newcomers get slagged without remorse, and some alias named Sofia getted everyone all worked up and ready to go to Brazil. My first posts were some pics I took of DTM and others doing a straightline in Glory Hole so I was able to avoid the usual initiation and just kept quiet for the most part.

Like others, I consider Maggots some of my good friends, and find myself spending way too much time here, and am glad to say it is becomnig cliche to say "Never met a maggot I didn't like."

Man, first impressions from 4 plus years ago.

There were about 10 threads at the time. Punani was around, frozen was around, powho, summit county newschooler, q-bert, orphic seth, and a handful of others. Things were slow at work. It was september and that craze of the impending season was upon us all. I was surfing the web for everything and anything skiing. I stumbled onto the forums and noticed people talking about places I ski. I felt as though I could offer some info and posted. Then I refreshed the browser 37 times waiting to see what people thought of my response. The hook lodged itself deeper into my throat.

I hadn't skied much the past 2 previous seasons as I was a young poor married college student and it was just too expensive. In the summer leading up to this season I had obtained a pretty good job, a house, and skiing was going to be a real possibility this season. My dad had purchased some timeshare at Snowbird that came with lot's of free skiing (which he was gracious enough to share with me).

Through the excitement of the board and the knowledge it's members bestowed I didn't even make it to the start of the regular season in UT. GT40, meats, and myself learned about the summer skiing of Mt. Hood through the board and found ourselves skiing the Palmer Snowfield less than one month from when I first registered in September. That would be the first of many great experiences I would have through information provided to me by the maggots.

It was September 2000 and the world was a different place. The stock market bubble hadn't burst, 9/11 was just another day in September and I had finished rehabbing my shoulder after dislocating it to end my '99-'00 season. I was looking forward to another ski season since I had just paid for my share in a ski house and read about Powder having a website. Began lurking there and discovered what seemed to be a cross between late night drunken fraternity BS session and a ski site with a wide variety of people who had a great understanding of and passion for skiing.

I found myself slowly visiting this site more and more on my slow times at work and the addiction grew. I soon after began posting myself and I remember my first flame from MPK. I remember thinking this guy has a serious anal fixation and just ignored him.

After hurting my shoulder again I found that the P-mag site soon became my only real connection with people who were still out there ripping while I was recovering from surgery and trying to get my body back in working order. The TR and pics served to remind me why I needed to go to physical therapy and get back on the slopes.

Blah, Blah, Blah, then the exodous from P-Mag and here I am.

I posted about 2-1/2 years ago on Powmag, asked a stupid question and got flamed back to lurker status until last October. Late one night at school, I registered again under a different name. Had I not been drunk, I may have come up with a name a little less stupid. Shortly afterwords, I found out I'd be moving to the East Coast and I needed some people to ski with, so I registered here...

I had started posting on several ski message boards some time around the end of '98. I posted occasionally on the old RemarQ, usenet, and yahoo boards etc.

I didn't actually get hooked however, until I read this post 4 or 5 years ago:

I was loathe to give up the trees so when that happened to me I just ended up sawing off the ends of the spear, leaving maybe 6" on either side. Bone conduction made the saw really loud but it was worth it (woulda been simpler to have someone else do it, though). Made it a whole lot easier to get on the chairlift as well. It was also a pain driving up with the windows open for the spear- having to look straight ahead made it tough to change the CD, the road salt stung where the spear exited the head, and one
brush with a truck coming the other way on the two lane secondary road was enough for me, thanks.

Accessorizing the ends of the spear is key. Try raccoon tails for that 'retro 50s' look or silver streamers for a more modern approach. I've been using some muted earth-toned fabrics since I'm an autumn.

When I read this exchange on the net back then it opened up a whole new reality for me. I realized that a ski message board could be a load of fun. Unfortunately, that forum closed not too long afterwards, but I'd seen a glimpse of what a good board could be. I bounced around, registering and checking out at least 20 ski forums before stumbling upon Powmag.
When I registered on Powmag back in February of 2001, I think only a handful of maggots had ever met each other, so the forum was more of an anonymous, wild frat house. But it was hilarious and fun like the old usenet forum. My immediate first impression was that it was the place I wanted to hang out.
After the twin crashes toppled Powmag I really hoped that TGR would be able to fill the void since so many old timers had been slowly moving over to TGR anyway (including myself). It has. It's been a great new home (thanks again, ONS).
It's been fun to meet maggots all over the globe since that time, but, even if I'd never even met a single maggot, I'd still be hanging around here because of the intelligent, witty, crazy, snow freaks that make this place so fun.

When I finally got a computer, one of the first sites I visited (after surfing a lot of porn, of course) was the old K2 site. That was a funny place. In fact, I stole this name from someone who used to post there...maybe he/she is still around. Just followed the masses over here.

I posted something similar to this in the imminent Mr. Stall's thread to get the artist formerly known as MD9 back. I'm glad retirements here are more Sugar Ray Leonard than Barry Sanders.

I met Yoss, MD, skiergirl, Steepndeep and BigAK at P'OB's bar in Chicago. Immersion was premiering. I had just hosted the Prophecy premier a week before. This was the beginning of my demise as a Chicago resident. from that point on the ball was rolling for my return to CO. Back to the board, though. I didn't really lurk for long. got jonged by the maggerotti like I had mistakenly taken a dip in the midst of a school of pirhana's. I like the "gang beat in" effect of jonging. after that I was stuck with living vicariously through the postings and TR's. I hit Tahoe and posted my first TR. I've mixed it up both there and here politically. I try to make it a rule to never attack anyone personally.

This place and a couple of actual political threads are my only outlets for editorializing the current events of the day. I don't really run into this much discourse with people my own age in Summit county. nor do I want to. I wouldn't mind meeting a female that knew the difference between Stonewall and Andrew Jackson. But I digress...

I skied with a couple of mag's three weeks ago. telekoptero and I are about as different as two white males could get. regardless, we skied like hell all over A-basin. Laughed at Lonestar falling in one of the ponds, Brett airing into the river(I really hope no one is keeping track of how he treats his skis), and SummitCo's hairbrained sense of humor.

I really hope the kids that are growing up right now understand how much more skiing is not than it was even five years ago. It's places like this that continue to push it even further.

Kinda followed crashnburn'd here last winter and started lurking for a while. but now since there is no snow wher i am at and i have a little more time on my hands i started posting more so this helps me get by since i won't ski again till next winter.

also really hoping that i can hook up with a few of you maggots when i am in UT and CO next year for a few turns.

I originally logged on to Powdermag with some username that had a number in it. After reading Iceman's rant about usernames with numbers in them I changed it.

Although I try to check the board several times a week, I have only accessed the board once or twice during working hours and I get the impression that that is when the most lively discussions take place. Coming across the Powder board for the first time was definitely an enlightening experience. I always thought I was pretty smart, but the wit on the board astounded me and it has been amazing all along.

I obviously have not participated a whole lot, but I have been able to meet and ski with at least 6 or 8 maggots and that is where the real rewards have been found.

Great post Bob - I look forward to skiing Solitude with the gang next winter - counting days.

Well...what is it man? Is it 6 or is it 8? You sound pretty definite. Why couldn't it be 7? Are you even sure about how many you've met? Sorry I can't be of more help but I DO know that you met three this day:

That's what I'm talkin' about! I never would have the thrill of heli-skiing the Wasatch with Endless, Spats, and SLC Freshies (hope I go the names right) if it weren't for the boards. Let me bump that number of maggots skied with to 10 or 12.

As for the best way to make it happen again... I'll contribute $1,000.00 to the Endlessseason Heli Operation - I won't even expect a ROI.

I used to drive all my friends crazy with talk of skiing all the time so when I got a computer I started looking for ski related sites. RSA was the first place I found. I don't quite remember how I found POWDER but it was a huge improvement over RSA which had become the flame capitol of the world. I met endless there though, that was cool, loved his site and dedication. I then started looking for other boards and found epic and POW. epic was kind of tame and POW was just plain fun. I posted some inane drivel and got flamed by Geronimo and flamed him right back. I figured it was some sort of test and a sense of humor, not to mention a thick skin, was called for, after being on RSA for a year POW was a relief. I heard about TGR not long after and signed up and started lurking, not posting much. When The Change happened I was ready. I first met maggots in person at Hood, it was a blast and I tortured the group with fiddle playing! I got to the BC summit last year with Odin while trying to recover from a wrecked achilles tendon. Turned out he was a fiddle player too and we knew some of the same people. Wow. I was glad he put up with my skiing, it was fun. When I left early with splat I left almost all my stuff with odin since he had the car and I was going on the bus. You can do that with maggots. I actually do hope to meet and ski with more of you sometime. The last two seasons I've skied a lot with DINMS and his dad Bruce since we all ski Baker. I'd been skiing alone for a long time and enoying it but it is great to have friends to ski with I've rediscovered. Oh my god, this post must be too long, I see the hook comi#%@*$&$%W*$*)*.................

I first posted on Pmag about two years ago, I think. I was trying to sell some Volkl P40s, so I put up a thread in Gear Swap and waited. phUnk and butters/dtm started making fun of me. That's pretty much all I remember. Two years later, my life is better and I've met a lot a good people and had some great days in the East and West. But I still haven't sold those fucking Volkls.

I started taking film pics of MD9 years ago. He told me about Powder Mag, but I didn't want to post and make him feel wierd. (Who wants to have their Dad posting?) Well the first Utah summit came (Feb 2002) and it sounded fun. So I took lots of pics with an old point & shoot. My first posts were not flamed, because ppl love to see pics of themselves. Since then. I've had to buy several new cameras to try to get better ski pics and vid.

Thanks to the BB, I ski more and have more fun. Most ppl in their 50's are slowing down. That's why I love the energy transfusions I get from hanging with the maggots. I'm happier and laugh more when ever I check the BB. It's a great place where ppl with so many different life styles can hang togeather and make a family.
