And great Patrick O'Brian weevil reference.
Wasn't the compliance rate for the great "Australian gun turn-in" less than 10%? Something like that, it was really just a media and political campaign that had no effect.

I turned in a rifle at a much-publicized police "gun buyback" once. It was a Mossberg .22 with a broken firing pin that wasn't more than $65 new in the 1970's, and parts were no longer available. They gave me $100 to "get the dangerous weapon off the streets", which was awfully nice of them considering it couldn't shoot and was worth absolutely nothing. Heard that goes for most guns turned in to "buyback" programs, great use of taxpayer money.

Nice work on some walking around cash. And Canada spent how many millions on their little scheme only to trash it when it didn't work.

Roughly one third of guns were handed in. http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/cp/australia

Philip Alpers, an adjunct associate professor at the Sydney School of Public Health and a specialist in firearm injury prevention, has documented that after the laws were changed, the risk of an Australian being killed by a gun fell by more than 50 percent.

1000-oaks caught in a frenzied misrepresentation twice in two pages. Does he own it and learn from it? Nope. Doubles down. This is why we can't have nice things.

He also named himself after a (relatively insignificant) part of a Lee Enfield, a quick google would show top result:

Are milled AKs worth the price? Or a quality stamped receiver just as good and a bit lighter?

I've owned both, prefer a nice stamped over a cheap milled. The weight is noticeable.

Milled or stamped is fine, what matters is buy a rifle or parts kit that was originally made in a comblock country.

If this is your first AK, WASR WASR WASR.

I've had an AK but sold it before I moved and at the time didn't appreciate it much. Looking at Vepr.

Vepr is good, it is basically a short barreled RPK. Russian made at the Molot factory.

They are also no longer being imported so they will dry up soon.

They're not getting any cheaper either. Our pawn shop has a nice Vepr that I'm itching to get. But it's milled and expensive.

I'm torn on getting an AK.

    a milled underfolder arsenal
    https://www.gunbroker.com/item/745810684

or a stamped Zastava 556 side folder $1300
    https://www.gunbroker.com/item/743925603

I'm leaning to the 556, they don't make them anymore and I'd like to dump my 7.62 and ak mags.

Of those two I would get the Arsenal, Bulgaria made.

5.56 AK mags are scarce and expensive.

It uses stanag ar mags. That's the only way I would do a 556 ak.

The Serb made 90 rifles and pistol variant had receiver heat treat issues at one time. The axis pin holes would get egged out and cease function.

You would need to internet sleuth around for serial numbers affected.

I hadn't heard that and that would really suck to try and fix. And the internet seems to confirm it.
