I used to scratch my head at the concept. It actually sorta makes sense on paper in a CQB context. What happens to both the blade and the pattern when you shoot it with the pokey bit attached???

The pattern won't ever come close to hitting the pokey bit.

Depending on load and choke? I don't know that particular gun well enough to tell what choke it has. This is a theoretical exercise for me, with all possible combinations.

No choke on this particular weapon.

You do realize the barrel is the upper tube?

Hope to get out this weekend to fire some buck and slugs down range.

I can do a comparison with and without pointy stick.

Lol. Yes. Ok, so straight cylinder? Slugs aren't what i personally use. Bad shoulders. #4 is my HD load of choice. Even without shot hitting it (which even with the widest possible choke and #8 shot should be a very remote possibility), I would imagine the blade is going to get a goodly amount of GSR? So clean it like the rest of the gun and oil it?

Personally I would clean off the blade with the blood of my enemies but in absence of that some Ballistol on a rag will do.

I would get sick of digging holes after every range trip. That shit would get old fast.

Anyone who uses a shotgun for self defense should do themselves a favor and pattern the loads they use. Even most light birdshot with no choke will stay on a dinner plate at 5 or so yards.

That being said, an AR is a much better option for home defense if you value things like lower recoil and .223's resistance to over penetration.

Spent yesterday afternoon at the range with an A2 with irons. It's way harder to hit stuff at distance with those than a modern optic.

they are one of those guns that are shot once and then never shot again... especially the Alaskan with it's very short barrel.

where it really hurts is on the middle finger where the trigger guard mashes it during recoil.

I think 10mm pistol makes more sense. And if you're in true bear country IE fishing in Alaska, 10mm in a chest holster plus a Shotgun with slugs or a heavy thumper rifle (ie .338, .458, etc) in reach.

That's why I just transitioned from .44mag revolver to new Glock 20... and one of your chest holsters.
The heavy thumper is a Henry 45-70.
I can practically bathe in honey before playing in bear country.

The guide that was killed last summer threw his 10mm to his client, who in his panic couldn't figure out how to manipulate the slide to chamber a round. Beyond sad. But can't understand why he wouldn't have one in the pipe.

Basically what KyleLanTheman said. Even with a light load and a wide open cylinder, the shot pattern won't get wider than a basketball at most defense-relevant ranges. And as far as hitting the bayonette? Hell, at six inches downrange of the muzzle most of the shot is still in the wad and hasn't even begun to really deviate wider than the diameter of the barrel.

The shotgun as a "don't even have to aim" combat deathray is wildly exaggerated (don't misunderstand, that's not to say it isn't an incredibly effective home defense weapon though...)

Right. I was thinking of the odd outlier. Not the majority.

    CLIFFS

The guide-Upton didn't have the gun on him, the client-chubon got to it first but dropped the mag slightly, thinking the mag release was the safety, then threw the gun to the guide, missing him and the mag came out... probably?

    quotes below

Chubon tried to shoot the bear, Hovinga said. “He grabbed [the pistol], was unable to make it fire,” Hovinga said. “There was not a round in the chamber, so the gun was empty. He couldn’t make the gun work.”

“He swung me around in the air,” Chubon told WKMG Television in Orlando, Florida, near where he lives. That’s when Chubon threw the pistol toward Uptain.

But the Glock, “it didn’t make it to Mark [Uptain],” Hovinga said. “The hunter fled.”

Investigators found the Glock and its magazine in different locations, Hovinga told WyoFile. The evidence raised speculation that Chubon might have pushed the magazine release button below the trigger guard thinking it was a safety switch.

“In the process of trying to manipulate [it], we think he dropped the magazine, or it wasn’t engaged and it fell out when he picked [the pistol] up,” Hovinga said.

Investigators found Uptain’s body 50 yards uphill from the attack site.

They found a canister of bear spray about five feet from his body, a canister that had been discharged and emptied.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service compared the two methods of defense in a paper “Bear Spray vs. Bullets. Which offers better protection?” that is undated. “Based on [USFWS law enforcement] investigations of human-bear encounters since 1992, persons encountering grizzlies and defending themselves with firearms suffer injury about 50 [percent] of the time,” the report reads. “During the same period, persons defending themselves with pepper spray escaped injury most of the time, and those that were injured experienced shorter duration attacks and less severe injuries.”

Your truth meme for the day

I see the EU forced the Swiss into neutering themselves.

Maybe I can finally get one of those sweet AMT rifles.

Military is spreading money like pixie dust to small, creative manufacturers. Hope you can go get some. How'd those brakes work out for you?
