Colorado PSA St Mary's Glacier/James Peak PAY Parking
Went up to tour James Peak on Saturday. As soon as we pulled in the traditional parking lot we were approached by a guy claiming to be the new owner of the land and told he was going to develop the property next year and that we now had to pay $5 to park there.
Since its traditionally been free it ticked me off a bit and we left to go elsewhere.
I'm sure he's within his rights, if he is the property owner, but its kinda lame IMO.

thanks for the update, that's good to know as I go up there atleast a couple times a year. I think I know of a spot where maybe 2-3 cars could park that's not too far from the main lot.

The "owner" of a significant parcel slated for development has nothing better to do with his time than stand around extorting 5er$ from folks wanting to Park???
Sounds kinda unlikley / sketchy... a lacky working for the new owner I could believe... but the owner him/herself?"Those 1%ers are not an avaricious "them" but in reality the most entrepreneurial of "us". If we had more of them and fewer grandstanding politicians, we would all be better off."

Don't they have plans to develop the land into another Echo-type ski resort? Not sure which part of the land, but I remember reading something about that.

i would not be surprised if he was..... tell him to sit on his thumb and rotate. he owns the land adjacent to st. mary's (where the ski resort is) but the land from the trailhead/road and the parking is not privately owned. Tell him you will pay him $5 when he shows you the deed.

For clarification I'm talking about the lot to the east of the official trailhead (a lot of people hike straight up the steep hillside from the lot rather than from the official trailhead).
And there used to be parking right by the official trailhead but that went away a couple years ago when the people bought the old ski area and fenced that land in.
He had a survey/plat showing the property, but I decided to leave rather than explore further deal with him.

In the form of 100 nickels.

im going to pay in canadian pennies this weekend. That sucks, but $5 for parking once you are already there sure beats the gas money to go somewhere else.
