I feel bad for my Daughter: Shortening a Silvretta Pure

Instead of grading papers or chores around the house, I spent some free time shortening a Silvretta Pure Kidz touring binding. It was very easy to do. Here are some pictures to help anyone who wants to do the same thing. It could easily work with any of the newer Silvretta bindings since they are all pretty much the same. The one advantage of the Pure Kidz is the little leg friendly din range of 2-4.

Boots too small, or binding too big?

These two small circles (in the grey, left of the blue AFD pad) hold a pin that holds the bars in place.

Gently tap them out with a hammer. Very little effort was needed to slide out the pins.

Here is what it looks like with the pin half way out. I tried to pull the pin out, but the metal is way too soft and I didn't want to damage the pin.

The Pin. Four of these, two at each end of the bars basically hold the entire binding together

Then just slid off the toe piece, measure and prepare to cut. Be sure to check that the heel piece is pushed as far forward as possible for maximum boot fitting range.

Cut, but triple check your measurements. I came very close to cutting way too much off and destroying the project

Prepare to drill. I wrapped some duck tape around the toe piece to hold it steady while drilling. Be sure to drill straight, or......you can figure it out.

Reinsert the pin carefully. I used some channel locks instead of the hammer. But the metal is soft so be gentle.

    Much shorter now.

    And now for the skis....

Like I said I feel bad for my daughter. At this point she is not very stoked. She says, "Does this mean I can't ride chairlifts anymore?"

Aw Mark, that will be super to get her into some mellow BC! You should feel happy for your daughter! Who needs chairlifts anyways?

I almost went this route for my daughter, but this year her BSL is 250, and the Frischi Explores go down to 245, so I went that way. She doesn't seem to care about hiking up in her Dalbello's. Cool.

Kick ass Kya! Hooked on the drug so early, you're in trouble!

Edit 4 - BTW, that pin is called a roll pin and can be replaced at any DECENT hardware store if you break it.

How has it worked out? What did you use for skins?

I am thinking of getting my son hooked with a similar set up.

    bump for parents like me...

Owen's BSL is 223, so this looks like the best option for next winter unless the little nugget grows a bunch.

I'd love to get him on tele gear, but there just isn't anything that small.

    and besides

It's way more important that he have some sort of touring option. Shufling along in Alpine boots ain't gonna cut anymore. He's seen other folks AT gear and asked why he doesn't have it.

anyone know how to get ahold of Kya for photos instead of red x's?

    I finally pulled the trigger...

Owen's new AT rig - chopped down Silvretta Pure Kidz binders on 97cm Head Mojo Jr skis - I had to cut 4cm off the rods to make them fit his boots (mondo 18.5 - BSL 227mm)

the kid hardly weighs 40 pounds yet - 110's were just too long - center mounted, they look really far back because of all the adjustment I still have
