Can a beacon pick up cell phones?

A friend of mine and I are thinking of going backcountry. My buddy has a becaon, but I don't. I'm wondering if a beacon can pick up my cell phone.

    Thanks for you help.

Yeah. Actually, we were skiing backcountry near Deer Valley and I went into the trees with my cell phone to take a leak. Anyway, my guide told me that he picked up my signal when he was trying to find me.

And seriously, don't be a dumb-ass. Do everyone a favor, take an Avi class and get a shit-ton of beacon practice in before you step single skin track into the hills.

Make sure your buddy has a phone so he can tell you where he's buried. If he does, you're good to go!

Even if your beacon can't pick up a cell phone, iif you are burried you can call you and tell him roughly where you are. It is standard BC protocol to make sure your pre-paid phone credits are at least 10 USD. Just a tip, if you use the same network you will save money on rescues and try to pick a network that has few dropped calls.

say you guys go ski backcountry assuming his beacon can pick up your cellular phone. What the fuck happens if he gets buried? Does the iPhone pick up a beacon's signal?

This goes to show that even though somebody has gear, doesn't mean they know shit.

I would make sure that the phone has a low battery so that it makes an audible beeping

Forget beacons...just call your friend and he can tell you where he's buried.

only if you put it inside of a studfinder...

on a side note one time a patroller and I were practicing beacon searches and the guy put the beacon in a snowberm by a light that was on and I circled that light for about 15 minutes looking for that damn beacon... Turns out they pick up high powered slope lights, that and beacons are really small and hard to find when not attached to a backpack or something.
