The Older but Gooder Movie Thread

So after watching my beloved Blazers getting their ass handed to them by a shitty Maverick squad, I started flipping through the channels and arrived at a great movie I hadn't seen in a long time and totally had forgotten about. This got me thinking about how many more there are that I've totally forgotten about.

    a) Return to Paradise: Vince Vaughn, Joaquin Phoenix, Anne Hesche. Great flick about a couple of buddies partying in Malaysia and one of them gets arrested for drug possesion and sentenced to death. The others can either serve a brutal sentence and save his life or leave him to die and walk away.

    b) Carlito's Way: Al Pacino, Sean Penn, many more...The epic of a drug lord's rise and subsequent fall to gloy. Great story, great dialogue, action and cast.

    c) Dead Man Walking: Another Penn movie also staring Susan Sherandon. A man convicted of the brutal murder of two innocent teenagers in the rural South faces his own death and guilt. A bit Christ-ey for me but an excellent movie none the less. One of my all time top ten flicks. The soundtrack, alone, is a haunting masterpiece.

    Whatcha got?

For some weird reason I caught Apocalypse Now and Midnight Run back to back without commercials recently late night on TCM. What a great combo, but I was a little worried about closing my eyes when I went to sleep.
Other relatively recent movies you can always pull off the shelf and enjoy:
Made (I just saw it for the first time and it may need a second go around)
    Snatch
    Lock, Stock and smoking Barrel
    Idiocracy
Ground Hog's Day (ya learn something every time)
    All the President's Men (ditto)
    Fargo
    Friday
    Tarantino's films
and Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi, they still stand up today.

I was just going to say "Chinatown.' Not exactly overlooked, since it's recognized as a great movie, but man, it's a great movie. You know what's also a pretty awesome, old-ass movie? "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane," with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Bette Davis is batshit crazy in this movie, as a Hollywood spinster who controls the life of her younger sister, former child star Crawford. There's a bunch of lines in this movie that get referenced a lot- certain Seinfeld episodes will be a little clearer, for one thing.

12 Angry Men: Henry Fonda, Lee Cobb, directed by Sidney Lumet. A jury deliberates their verdict in a murder trial; initially 11 vote to convict, but one (Fonda) isn't convinced. Awesome movie. Lee Cobb is the shoutingest motherfucker you ever saw.

Rear Window (best Hitchcock movie): Jimmy Stewart, Grace Kelly. Laid-up photographer Stewart spends his convalescence watching his neighbors, one of whom (played by Raymond Burr) seems to be up to no good. This is a good movie just to watch, but there's also a lot written about it- think of Stewart (who uses his camera to watch people going about their lives, and ultimately sends Kelly out to do his investigating for him) as Hitchcock, the director. Another good reason to watch this movie: Grace Kelly is unbefuckinglievably hot. I mean, just smoking hot. And it's evident from the way the movie is shot that Hitchcock worshipped her.

I haven't seen this one, but what about Sleeper? I love that one.

    Vanishing Point - the original

1971 road movie starring Barry Newman, Cleavon Little, Dean Jagger, and a 1970 Dodge Challenger.

Vanishing Point is notable for its scenery from filming locations across the American Southwest and its social commentary on the post-Woodstock mood in the United States. It was one of the earliest films (following on the example of Easy Rider), to feature a rock music soundtrack. It is beloved by Mopar enthusiasts because it is one of the most significant movies ever to feature a classic Dodge muscle car. The film continues to be popular to this day and is considered a cult film.

Films from the 90's are considered "old" now?

"Dr. Strangelove". Best film ever made.

Mernau's "Nosferatu" - best vampire/Dracula film ever (Herzog's was ok, but there's really no comparison.

"The Wild One" - Lee Marvin's sweater rules.

    "Duck Soup" - genius.

"Alexander Nevsky" - the lake battle is surreal.

Being a "chic" I think back to Breakfast Club, Some Kind of Wonderful, Pretty In Pink, Young Guns and St. Elmo's Fire.

Although, the first one that came to mind was Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid.

Probably my most favorite of all time:

The Untouchables (1987) - Kevin Costner before he sucked, Sean Connery, Andy Garcia, and Bobby De Niro. Hard movie to beat.

And let's not forget Rad (1987). No doubt Bart Conner at his finest.

I just watched, "All About Eve".

Bette Davis was marvelous as an aging Broadway actress. The whole film has fun with the pretentiousness of stage, film, etc. It also shows how ambitious some aspiring stars are and what they will do to get the spotlight.

Oh..."Sixteen Candles" was on TV the other day. That's a good one too.
