DVD's aren't high def. But a good quality DVD can look better than a shitty BluRay (which is supposedly HD, but some of the older ones are terrible).

SEVEN MEN FROM NOW (1956)
I just watched this Bud Boetticher directed, Burt Kennedy scripted, Randolph Scott and Lee Marvin starring western.
Holy Schmow !
Talk about streamlined storytelling!
The economy of style, booth in terms of script and action is fantastic; the film clocks in at a svelte 78-minutes!
I have seen films almost 3x as long that can't create dimensional characters or unfurl a story as is done here.
While this was my re-introduction to Randolph Scott (I first saw him in Ride the High Country in a film class in college, but I don't remember much about that film), I can't say that I am sold on the man as he comes off stiff and stoic here (though he did a grip of respected Westerns during his career). Marvin, though? He is stellar and has become one of my favorite actors.
A bonafide classic from the Golden Age of Hollywood Westerns, for sure.

CAT BALLOU (1965)
Jane Fonda stars as the titular character, portraying a prim and proper school marm who becomes a rowdy outlaw. "Narrated" by Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye, who may very well be the first cinematic example of a Greek Chorus (and were undoubtedly the influence for the Farrelly Bros. using Jonathan Richman in There's Something About Mary). The scene stealer, however, is Lee Marvin as a drunk and washed-up gunfighter.

I miss TCM.

It was the original free with basic cable channel.
A few years ago it became a ten dollar addition? Wtf? These are all royalty free except for Ted turner TCM greed.

I try to get my kids to watch black and whites (can you say that anymore?). But the directing, plot and acting is so much better.
