Guitar Players Who Don't get Enough Credit

The recent back and forth yakity-yak in the Zep thread got me thinking of guitar palyers I like and don't seem to be mentioned in such discussions as being in the pantheon of axemen.

In no particular order, and with no claim of completeness:

    George Harrison
    Mike Campbell
    Jeff Beck
    Pete Townshend
    Steven Stills
    Prince
    David Lindley
    Waddy Wachtel
    Ry Cooder
Keith Richards and the forgotten Mick Taylor
    Lindsey Buckingham
    Adrian Belew
    Robert Fripp
    Robbie Robertson
    Steve Howe
    Rodney Crowell

    Unreal.

Oh - and Pete Townsend gets plenty of credit, as do Fripp, Belew, Beck, and Cooder... at least from me.

I'd add Steve Hackett to that list, as well as Alex Leifson and Mark Knopfler.

Cooder was ranked #8 in Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists issue in 2004. But even if all he had ever done was play the solo on Sister Morphine, he'd still be one of the greatest.

FZ will always be underrated in the mainstream, but for good reason.

Hiram Bullock shreds. Check out Jaco Pastorius Live in NYC Vol. 2.

He's actually at the top of my list. Mick's not totally forgotten though. It's been a few years, but back in the 90s he toured with his own band several times. Made it around to the world too. All in smaller, really cool venues. I saw 3-4 of his shows and they were awesome. Even said hi and shook his hand a couple of times. Awesome guy. Oh and I have one of his CDs in the rad special box with a guitar pick and stuff...might be signed too.

The other name that comes to mind is Nick McCabe of the Verve. He's mindblowingly good, and thankfully they got back together and are putting out a new album.

As for Keith Richards, he's pretty universally considered the greatest rhythm guitarist ever. And if I recall correctly, when "Sympathy" was recorded he played all of the guitar for it. Brian Jones was too fucked up to play at that point. That said, Mick Taylor's take on "Sympathy" is incredible. You can hear it on Ya-Yas.

All the people who continue to pay for Stones shows.

    Hmmmm...let's see...who else...

    Chris Cain
    Jeff Davies (BJM)
    Robert "Waddy" Wachtel

I'd say John Squire too, but he gets props already I think.

It's hard to objective in this thread. It's guitar and music freaks that are going to respond to this post. So many of the names on this thread are veritable talents known to those posting on this thread but not appreciated by the masses.

    I didn't see...

Johny Marr - Geez, that guy plays so clean and shimmering.

    J. Mascis - Who else could write something like 'Freak Scene' that rips and has a melodic sensibility that could make Robert Smith drool? Note, J. covers 'Just Like Heaven' with Dino and solo.

a lot of under-appreciated talent mentioned here
    that said, historically:
    Duane Allman-agreed big time
    Robben Ford
Joni Mitchell/David Crosby- gave us alternate tunings- hell, invented some alternate tunings...

    Geordie Walker. Sweet ax too:

I'll always say that Hank Garland's playing on Elvis's "Little Sister" set the standard for all rock-n-roll guitarists who followed.

Ry Cooder blows my mind. I've been listening to a bunch of his Buena Vista stuff recently... straight awesome.
