beacon jong seeks practice
I acquired my beacon/probe/shovel a couple weeks ago. I've been reading up on avy awareness and procedures, but really don't know jack. I've been wearing the gear in bounds on big days, but it really doesn't do anyone else any good until I can use it proficiently. After recent in bounds slides at several resorts I frequent it's clear that I need to step up the pace of learning in this area. Any mags in the east bay or north shore area who would get together for some practice?

Squaw has a beacon basin, or so I read. But the couple patrollers I've asked about it said they knew nothing.

Kirkwood has a beacon basin, although when I was there a couple weeks ago, it had not yet been operational for the season (first too little snow, then too much snow, or some such excuse).

We often have some beacons buried at Alpine. Ask any patroller if there's one set up (or stop by the Patrol room at summit and ask in there).
If you want to do some practice on a Saturday afternoon/evening around Alpine, PM me. I have 3 beacons so we could bury a couple and then look for them. My kids could use the practice too.**

In any case, if you're ever really in this situation make sure you at least bargain in a couple of fluffers.
