My impression of guys like that ( I am And know several ) is He is purposefully wearing exactly what he chooses to wear - purposefully - and does not care one bit what anyone else thinks .

Old couple in fart bags closing day at Alpine. Old guy wearing mittens. On a day when people were wearing t shirts and shorts.
Could have been ironic but I doubt it and if it was hardly worth the misery.

    Definitely.
The line at AM today was a shitshow--if they don't enforce social distancing the state will shut them down for the rest of the season.

    no pic.s - a couple of stories...

my friend, Mike, skis Salomon SXs -
    only boot he can wear (comfortably) since breaking his feet exiting an airborne helicopter in Vietnam... ;

John died in 2016 ; he was eighty-something...
John skied in a 1987 Descente suit from Vail ( maybe it was '89 ) -
John and I last skied in 2012 - he preferred his 205cm Atomic Arc SLs , though in 2010 with a foot of weightless fresh snowfall, he skied a pair of 170cm RX8s I had with great pleasure !
Oh - John's turquoise SLs were mounted with M4-15s, " the lightest binding available" ( the same rationale I used when I mounted bindings on my 1981 Omeglasses ) -

John had a lifetime of stories -
his sons had raced against Phil and Steve...
one of my favorite stories ends with his son saying,
' some days everything you can do, still isn't fast enough. "

    I love that story... and
there is a lesson in that story -

( I'm) sorry I don't have pic.s for you - But If you ponder the stories and use your imagination, your picture in your mind's-eye will be as good as the real thing
( and if you really need a pic. see my pic. in BigLost's thread in 2012... )

... Just an old geezer... skiJ

Anyone that served in Vietnam (or any armed conflict) and/or is still skiing into his 80's has my respect and can wear whatever the hell he chooses. And the guy in the well coordinated red, white and blue may very well have his own back story that we will never know. Or maybe just did it on a dare, toes up pose included. I guess we need to consider there may be a bit more than meets the eye or ear any time we use the G word.

For closing day at a local hill I thought about going dressed up as a Full Gaper: jeans, tucked into the boots, an oversized sweater, fake rental stickers on everything, carrying my skis hugging them in a big X across my chest, etc.

But my wife said that people wouldn't get it and that I would actually look like just another skier (and she was right).

reminds me of a New Yorker cartoon--nerdy guy with a shaved head and his wife says "Somehow, on you it just looks bald."
I tried the biker look once--mustache and goatee, but I just looked like an English professor.

I don't think I've shared this one. Bluebird weekend at Mammoth, probably around this past March.

We were coming down one of the blue/black runs, and we saw below us a group of people stopped and a snowmobile climbing up, so we pulled over. The snowmobile stopped a little bit below where we were and the driver stepped off, we asked the guy if we could help. He said it was nothing serious, one of the girls in the group of snowboarders below had dropped her phone and she was sure that it was in that area. We kept going, slowly, making wide curves on the trail, but we didn't see anything -- except for a white snowboard by itself in the middle of the choke point of the run. We kept going, when I went by the group one of the girls was on the phone (I guess calling the missing phone), when we got to the chair, Fofette was laughing, she said that when she went by the group, the missing phone was in another pocket of the girl's jacket.

We got on the chair, and this same group was coming down the run directly under the chairs. They had stopped again, I saw one of the girls on the phone, another one holding a second snowboard under her arm and another girl walking back to the trial from the trees. OK, she needed to pee, I thought, totally normal. But then I noticed that she also had her board with her, so now in this group they all had their boards, plus one (the one under the arm of one of them). We heard one of them yell to the girl coming back from the trees "OMG! Kayla is back at the lodge! She walked all the way back!"

I'm sure that this group of friends has lots of fun stories ("OMG, like this one time at Brighton...").

I Had a Ford Taurus in college with the upgraded trim - fake shiny wood grain. Classy ride. Closed the bar out one night, made a new friend. New friend Gets in the car and was very impressed. “Daaaammn, this must be expensive.”

Point of the story - the veneer on your skis looks nicer than the shitty plastic trim in my taurus. I wouldn’t be surprised if the rich wives in fast tracks see those skis and decide to downgrade to the peasant line just to ride up with you.
