Going through scanned slides from my dad's archives this made me think of this thread. Not sure why. It was the last day of ski school when I was 9 or so. c.1968.

A good one was the snowboarder couple we passed walking up to the base area the other afternoon to ski some soft spring bumps. They were leaving and visibly upset about something they were talking shit about. As we passed them they told us that it was fucking terrible and that we were wasting our time trying to ski. I laughed at first because I thought they were just kidding, but then the guy continued to say, his voice shaking with anger, how much the riding sucked dick. This was all in passing...My immediate response was "well then learn how to snowboard" and then I laughed out loud at how ridiculous that exchange was while my wife scolded me (who's side is she on?)...I haven't had a pass for a few seasons and I've really been looking forward to spring resort skiing...So ya, I was short with the stoke-less bitch.
The skiing did not suck, one of the stand out days for the season actually. We shared last chair with a stoked snowboarder visiting from MN who was also loving the conditions.

I've been noticing this so much this season. Intermediate level couples at the ski area with fresh matching setups, the girl has the 9X mm ski and the guy almost always has the 10X mm version of the ski. Low tech bindings seem to be a popular choice, though they are clearly skiing inbounds for the day (and probably >95% of the season). But he's gotta have the fatter ski cause he's a better skier than her and skis more pow right?

tl;dr stoke-less couples and guys who ski more imaginary pow than their GF

    Those are some badass skis.

The width thing always gets me doing math. Let's say my wife weighs 115 and I weigh 190. Let's say my skis are 186 x 108 waist width. Leaving tip and tails out to make the math easier, that's about 2,000 sq cm under foot, or 10.5 cm to hold up each pound. My wife's are Prodigy 2.0s 158 x 98 = about 1,550, or about 13.5 sq cm per pound. So on her far narrower skis she has much more float than I do.

Her tip width is 122, mine is 136. Hers is 1.06 per pound, mine is .72. So again, her skis are wider than mine per pound.

People don't think about weight when they compare people's skis.

I get that too. But I'm pretty sure the gapers making crappy stem christies down blue runs on their low tech binders don't get it.

Or, you could have asked them why, and when the complained about something like sticky snowboards, just tell them to get a quick coat of the old yellow wax.

And yeah, people have one ski quivers and end up on tech bindings in bounds. Not my jam, but I have a complete garage full of skis. At least they are out sliding on snow.

Ya I could have done that. I was already annoyed by them because they were walking two abreast, so my wife and I had to step aside to let them past on the walkway before they started complaining to us. If they approached me differently, caught me on a chair or at the parking lot at the end of the day maybe I'd of let them know what a wax and scape would do, or maybe told them how to change aspects as the day goes on.
The 200 + other people I saw that afternoon were all smiles. This is the gaper thread so the two who couldn't figure out waxing is a good idea when it hits 55 belong, or maybe ride something that didn't bake in the sun all day, etc. belong here.

I don't get it. Enlighten me.

Now the guy I saw today trying to step into his bindings without removing his Cat Tracks definitely qualifies. Although he seemed to be a good skier, just absent minded. Like me. And he caught on pretty quickly.

I turned 70 the other day so I took these wood skis I had laying around out for a spin to celebrate my advanced age and weak skill set. Per: Intermediate senior aka gaper.
