I chuckle to myself, because that seems ridiculous.

Turns out they were right. I was wrong. Off groomed is mostly grass, with maybe 10" of crusty horribleness on top (but it was open!). Groomers are icy death luges. Dull, rockered skis were not the weapon of choice. Racey dudes (and ladies) on carvers were blowing my doors off. I really could've gone for some razor sharp carvers that day. Lesson learned.
Exactly like the days I spent there a couple years ago right down to the MC tour. Much tempting off piste but plagued with a knee twisting crust.

It is why everyone needs a Brahma or equivalent in their quiver. You're not going to keep up with the polished ice skis but you can have fun.

I really enjoyed SV. Especially the day I skied solo. Funky mix of funky cool locals and jerry's on the chairs. And nobody knows or has ever skied with anyone from Iowa.

Too unicorn. At this point in my life I need a bit more time running with a herd and less time being "that guy'. I mean listening to Cody Townsend blather on Blister is good, but not the same as real life like minded friends even half as smart as those dudes.

Bob there is a chance I swing back through there this year. My wife and parents aren't interested in dealing with Yurp and the covid test to get back home in March with the chance of getting stuck. So if there is snow a south swing is probably in the works. Would love to take some more laps with you if I do. Then again you should go ski in Yurp.

    Anyway, back to gaper quotes.

Best Gaper qoute of the weekend?

I’m down for some groomer hot laps when conditions make off piste not fun. Sure thing. Heading to Montana first week of December and plan to hit Sun Valley on the way home.

Hey, everyone talks shit about “Flatstar” in Tahoe but it has some of the best tree skiing anywhere - it’s all relative and I love Sun Valley for what it is.

Sorry to continue the hijack. In 1978 (we never got to the top in 76-77 the winter of no snow) all of the local crew would gather at the top first run to smoke a bowl. Then it was non-stop to the bottom of Warm springs (usually Psyco in front). If you were still with the group at the chair, that was the shake out. Those of us who couldn't keep up never saw 'em again - until the next day.

    this^^^

    klixter -
hardly a hijack - this is the gaper thread !

I'm thinking SV's got lot more open terrain than it had in '76, And a lot more people...
I was struggling to figure-out how you could lose part of your crew for the rest of the day on an opening run... (?)

trees, Safety meetings and smoke shacks, ,,, and then I had a thought -

    fixed-grip double chairs.
I had my own experience with that as recently as 1994 (and 2008)...

... some things moved more slowly in the 1970s. . .
( it sure felt like it to me )

    ' enjoyed your story - thanks !

Glad you liked it. Among those of us still doing it, it still goes on. Except it's usually in the bowls.

Best Gaper qoute of the weekend?

“I love paying 30% less for crappy snow.”
    - My Houston-dwelling sister about her family’s pre-Thanksgiving trip to Summit County

Who'd he say it to? Probably good advice for someone taking a group lesson.

She said that to me and after laughing I asked her if the slowest person on the hill sets the pace for everyone. It's a private lesson, not a private mountain.

Does "can't slow down" equate to being out of control?

Obviously if someone does something unexpected in front of us that would be a case where you can't slow down quickly enough is not the same as being ooc, imo.
