Their kids will be winning Olympic ski medals and starring in ski movies. That's the way it works in America. Most of us aren't descended from Savoyard wood cutter/mountain guides. You pick up ski knowledge and culture one way or another, or die trying.

Every time I get on a lift with a chick riding single: bla bla bla my boyfriend bla bla bla.

What I'm saying is I'm the gaper.

I got in a chairlift long debate with an older fellow at squaw, he asked me if I tele'd, I said nah just touring and he kept insisting I could tele on randonee bindings... I think his idea of randonee bindings was a little older than mine. Not necessarily a gaper, just a badass old timer

    Smuggs?

It was between -4 and - 8 the other day. I see an Asian guy, 50ish, without a helmet, hat, headband, goggles, glasses, face mask, bandana.....nothing to protect his face or ears.

Is it possible to not get some skin damage from that?
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

Well, maybe he was a genuine Tibetan Sherpa, so it was no big deal?

I dunno...he was pretty well dressed for a sherpa. You’d think Bogner or Kjus would make suitable head gear for the well healed.

You could tele on the old Silvretta cable AT bindings. Not well, but then you could alpine ski well on them either.

    While riding on the lift
Gaper: “can you recommend a ski run”
Me: “sure. what kind of skiing you like?”
    Gaper: “I like backcountry”
Me: “if that’s the case you should try to get a refund for your lift ticket”

40yrs ago that Madonna chair was a seriously cold ride up. Is it still a fixed double? Knowing that place I'd assume it is. That was back when Doc's still had trees....

I don't remember if that or Killington Peak Double was colder?

Heh. Those were my first touring bindings back in the 70s. They broke.

There was a guy here last week trying to telemark with Radicals and MTN Explores. I first saw him from the lift and thought he was really new or bad on tele gear. Then I was standing near the top and he glides by and I notice his boots/bindings and as soon as the slope rolled over he lunged into an out of control attempt at telemarks. He continued this bizarre exercise all the way down to the bottom.

When my boot came out, the cable was twenty feet back on the hill, and the ski was fifty feet ahead. No idea where the side cable hold-downs ended up. I figured that was broken, but maybe it was a feature?

I was asked this morning by a lady rolling down the street if I knew how to get to the ski area. I pointed at the end of the road and said it's right over there. Apparently her GPS took her halfway up the hillside
