Thanks so much for the advice - didn't get my act together to make it up there until Sunday, and just barely had an hour before dark at that. Bummed I missed out but it's beautiful up there, and an impressive amount of snow for this late in the fall. I guess everyone had a good snow year =D

And now it looks like snows in the forecast for Thursday...

As in 10 days ago? Did the big weather event Feb 7-9th put down more snow there? What is the elevation of TC....did it get all snow (or get rain?)

    Yes,10 days ago.

The top is almost 10k, and the bottom is 7500.

From the ruby heli skiing site, it sounds like they got snow, but I dunt know. I live in tahoe, went there for a day.

Nice Rod. Spent a weekend out there last year, and want to head back sometime soon. I was hoping they got more than Tahoe did with these last few systems.

    Old thread resurrection.

I'll be driving through the Ruby Mountains January 8th and if the snow is good will be staying a few days for some touring. If anyone is in the area and needs a touring partner, or just wants to show an out of towner around the area hit me up. How is the snowpack in the area these days? Non-existent? If there is an absolute miracle of snowpack stability I would love to hit Terminal Cancer but there is obviously an incredibly small chance of a green light snowpack in there that early in winter and I do not suffer from "line fever" so much to push it too hard in questionable conditions. If the snowpack sucks I will just fast track it to the SLC area for a week or so.

Bump....anyone with beta on current conditions? Wondering of the recent storms that missed Tahoe and hit UT may have hit the Ruby's as well.

Hit it Saturday. Snow was breakable chalk. Quite difficult to make consistent turns without punching through and hooking the skis.

Thanks for the insight. Are you talking about TC, or the higher elevation stuff in the back of the canyon. Last time I was there, conditions were warm and soft in TC, with wind buff and chalky pow up at the lakes.

Thanks for the beta. How far down the canyon is the closure this time of year/how far is the walk to the base? Just trying to plan my timing if I hit it I will have a tight-ish schedule to keep that day

    Ruby Mountains, NV

No snow in mammoth so time to head east. Going to try to hit terminal cancer tomorrow on my way to SLC. Hit me up if you're in the area and need/want a partner

not really a closure so much as drive as far as you can. generally lots of places to pull off at bottom of canyon. 4wd with good clearance can make it farther, at least up the first steep bit of road to the next parking. you can prolly go further but whether you could make it to the next parking (i think Thomas Creek) is a big question. If you can make it that far you're easy walking distance to the coolie. If not, catching a ride with a snowmobiler is not usually too hard.
the crux is the willows from the river to the mouth of the coolie.

Gotcha thanks for that. I am in a medium clearance all-wheel-drive rental car so probably will play it safe and park at the first hint of snow
