[QUOTE= Godspeed to them. Doesn't interest me but more people skiing isn't a bad thing.[/QUOTE

After seeing the lines at Jackson and Vail last weekend I'm not sure I care that much about "growing the sport".

They are very clearly gearing towards beginners, people who skin for fitness, and people that just generally want to go for a walk in the woods on skis and not really worry about avalanches.
Oh I thought you must have had some involvement to know who the target market is,
But I guess you were just being the know it all bro-brah.

They have some advanced terrain on the mountain, just won’t be open at first without them guiding.

Props to Bluebird for trying it out. Not something I'm interested in, but if it gets people out there trying shit out in a controlled environment to see if they like it I'm all for it. I doubt it will reduce the number of people I see around the Front Range backcountry hot spots who straight up can't fucking ski (numbers certainly aren't going down), but every little bit helps.

Yes! And where else can you be so "absolutely safe"?

    According to Beth ...
But safety always comes first — and to ensure terrain is absolutely safe for guests and employees, it takes time.

Yeah right. Who knew that hiking uphill from a boundary rope wasn’t allowed.

Well me and 99.9% of the skiing population but hey gotta have a bogey man.

Fuck you, I'm the first to shit on Vail, and I'm a dentist, but Taft was old enough and smart enough to know exactly what he was doing. It was a classic case of teen DUI. Seen it many times. Too bad his parents needed litigation to get a closure that they could never find personally knowing that their perfect child that they raised was just a prop of their own fantasies. They lost on all counts, and it should be right in the mirror on them. One of my best friends was on the jury, and it fucked him up more than the community. You can't live here and look that situation in the eye and not know exactly what went down.

You want to close terrain down, of course you don't, but you are the first to bitch when someone goes into a closure and dies, knowing very well it's shut. Fuck that.

It's a round of fuck ups and complacency. On all sides. It brought out the sick nature of the perfect child syndrome in parents in the valley, it brought out the sick cover up with VR and reporting. It brought out the very worst.

If I get that beacon from DSM, it's going right to a high school student. That's why I gave him my name and address and asked to take it off his hands. I was at the academy this morning. Looking for candidates.

Wow - didn’t mean to strike a nerve. I didn’t know him and certainly wasn’t advocating for the route his parents took with my comment. I also don’t think it’s fair to let their decision end up being reflected on him.

All I know is that I’m not sure I would have been aware of that when I was 13 - nor do I think most kids that age would be. I didn’t grow up in a resort town though, so maybe everybody’s knowledge of ski area policies is much better than mine would have been. Who knows. I just thought it was a little rough to take that tone regarding a fatal mistake made by a young kid, regardless of what transpired after.

You don't know. He did. He poached that line with full knowledge. No innocence there.

I was growing weed in my windowsill and fucking at 13. That kid was skiing those lines almost 2 decades before I did in his life.

Don't assume anything. He was a fuck up. A perfect little fuck up. Nice kid, but a fuck up.

You are way out of your element. He was not a random 13 year old in a resort. That line was taught to him over a couple years of shenanigans.

Do you think us locals would bother side stepping up for a couple hundred feet into upper prima cornice to get a couple turns? Hell no. One, you could just duck the rope, two, what's the point, there are so many places to get better ones. I know personally who invented that move. It's sad all around, but Taft was a cocky kid. You can't extrapolate from anything more than that.

    Stupidity, with results.

Fair enough Makers. As Mikey said, there are clearly still some raw nerves and it wasn’t my intention to stoke the flames. I had an immediate reaction to the calling out of that kid based on what I know of my own experiences and ski area knowledge at that age - which unfortunately didn’t involve either windowsill weed or skiing Vail regularly.

some people don’t know the situation as it was so they just respond with what they know now and it’s ok
