Then call hot sulfur Ranger district because you are gonna need a USFS special use permit for an event that size. That is a highly environmentally sensitive area. They can fine each individual and on top of that you could see a 5000$ fine as the organizer.

Basin is going to be Ikonic this winter. Pretty bummed - was hoping they would try and go alone or do just a couple of days partnership with some smaller resorts. I don't think most Epic Pass holders skied more than 5-7 days there each winter, so the potential reduction in crowds next season will likely be minimal.

None of the options are looking attractive at this point. Will likely be my first season completely forgoing a season pass...

I'm planning on spending a few days backpacking in your fine state at the end of August and am looking for some opinions. I was considering both the Elk Park to Needleton semi-loop and the Four Passes Loop in the Bells, but it seems like most people prefer the Weminuche loop, yeah? I suppose both will be pretty busy and be susceptible to the afternoon monsoon rains? I'll be hiking during the week at least.

I also saw a report from two weeks ago in the Weminuche that the avalanche debris and snow were still very significant. I'd think at least the snow wouldn't be an issue by late August?

Are there any other loops I should consider? I'll be solo so no car shuttles possible. Three days would be ideal though I'd budget four for Elk Park to Needleton since I normally can do 15 miles a day at altitude with climbing without much trouble, but I realize that afternoon thunderstorms might mean I'm only hiking in the mornings.

Oh, and I'm not interested in peak bagging so I don't plan on side trips. Thanks!

West Elk wilderness has lots of loop-able trails and doesn't see near the traffic of some of the more popular routes.

Four Pass Loop wonít have many people, except at the Bells.
Some people do it in a day.

Lots of shit to do up here.

Yeah even when the basin was unlimited on the Epic pass, most Denver folk and others who only ski 10-20 days a season wouldn't do more than the 5-7 days at the basin for sure. I agree in thinking the crowds will be just as bad. I was hoping for an A basin/loveland pass, not that I really expected it but it would've been cool. Although none of it effects me much living in UT these days... haha Ikon fucked the cottonwood canyons, that's for sure.

Abasin just announced a Mountain Collective partnership too. Kicker is, Abasin passholders get 50% off at all MC resorts, which is pretty sweet. People should lose their minds again, over two extra days of skiing like it is gonna ruin the place.

Is it really that sweet of a deal? If you end up skiing 4 days at mountain collective resorts @ $80-90/day (1/2 off full ticket price) then wouldn't you have been better off just getting the full Mountain Collective pass instead? I guess its a good perk if you ski less than 3 days at other resorts, otherwise seems like a bit of window dressing.

The math works out in my favor, perhaps not for others.

How far up the road to Peak 10/July 4th Bowl can one reasonably go with a stock 4Runner?

And in terms of the 2019-20 Winter Outlook, so the countdown begins:
    https://longrangesnowcenter.net/201...-seasonal-2019-20-winter-preliminary-outlook/

Western US outlook looks pretty good at this very early stage.

Itís been a few years, but Iíve driven my stock tundra to the top of mercury lift. Then walked the old road to the top of peak 10.

Iíd love to hear about that adventure in September.

Years ago I drove my Subie to the top of Mercury then hiked to the top of Peak 10. However, that was 14 years ago and I cannot remember how bad the road is from Mercury to the base of July 4th Bowl. Going to give it a go next week in my friendís stock 4Runner.

I parked at the top of Mercury last year and mountain biked up. Pretty sure a stock 4R could go at least to the intersection with Wheeler Trail. Probably further, but I turned at Wheeler.

Thatís good, thanks. We wonít be going up the final switchbacks to the ridge, so we should ok, as I think it flattens our past the Wheeler Trail before those switchbacks.

Stock 4runner was good to go pretty high up, as far people were driving on the 4th of July on a low snow year anyway

    Fix typo

That's exactly what is looks like. Not the poster and wasn't with him/her, but I hiked up to Skyscraper and skied down just a couple of weeks prior from Rollins. The snow field at King Lake was intact all the way from the trail to the water's edge. In retrospect, I should have just done multiple laps there instead of making my hike much longer for an additional 200 feet of vertical or so.

^^^ yep. King Lake. A week ago you could drop off the Divide and make it to the shore with one 10í rocky segment in between patches. Recommend a fly rod for the lake. Some fisherman said there are huge cutties in there.
