I know. I meant as in the flowering buds are swelling and the fuzzy catkins are emerging ?

Our hope is to occasionally be able to work remotely. One of the considerations we talked about generally in condo shopping was whether we could see ourselves working from a place, or see ourselves spending a week in a place. And quite frankly, the answer was mostly "no" for some of the places we could afford in WP, like HCH. And you kinda answered a lot of it in your last sentence.

Everything is a tradeoff. We talked about how choosing a place further out meant we may use it less; certainly the quick one night mission is less/not doable. OTOH, we get a place somewhat removed from the masses, way more peaceful. But also in a town, so if we need a carton of eggs or some milk, we can walk to the small grocery store there. And while it is 25 minutes to the ski area, my dream town is Durango which is the same deal. And there are hiking/biking trails and xc ski trails right there. We have close friends who have a place on the edge of town and we've stayed with them a lot, so we had some sense of what it would be like to be there. And of the plowing or lack thereof. And we also have other good friends nearby, so that played in to the decision as well. But I have no doubt there will be times I will regret not buying in WP! And I am sure I will still ski WP a good bit (I prefer WP to the Boat by a good bit but the GF feels the opposite); I have friends with places and the seasonal rental I am currently in may allow me to poach a night here or there for a fee.

While there are tradeoffs, we kept coming back to one thing (which is why we jumped now and didn't wait till summer like we originally planned): the price. The mortgage (and taxes, insurance, HOA) on this place will cost us about what I pay now on rent/utilities, and I'm moving in with the GF before a mortgage payment is due. So this place will require no tightening of the belt, all it "cost" us was the down payment, which we both already had and wasn't going to be different in the summer, so there will be no lifestyle change to afford it. That was HUDGE!

condo (which is odd for Oak Creek). But it's a very small complex, 8 total units, on the edge of town, so pretty quiet.
I know the vol fire dept. and a good cobbler, so hollar if in need (and a bunch of people growing weed the old fashioned way). Congrats.

Boat vs. Wanker - they are very different and get different weather which is what makes it cool being 2hrs away from each other on the same road. They basically average the same about of snow but Steamboat totals are compressed into a shorter season which makes January and February on balance snowier there. And then the lower elevation, more sunny aspects and more good pitched groomers makes spring skiing their awesome.

Rode the old resort on mines Sunday and there was a surprising amount of snow around tree line. Glad everyone made it out of the slide alright.

Honest question, why is the amount of snow surprising? Even just looking at the Snotel and the snow report at WP tells the story.

And if anyone want to have a conversation about why Mines was bad terrain selection, read the discussion and forecast on CAIC (you can scroll backward through the dates). If it is still unclear, as Brigham Young said "this is the place".

Didn't plan on it when skiing Vail thursday, but had the back bowls open and it actually didn't suck. Even on sunny aspects it wasn't too punchy or crusty. It's been sunny n dry for a bit, but there's still some nice skiing out there.

Breck needs some wind though... Tbar isn't getting it's usual high pressure smoothing out.

Going back to how set up the inversion is in Gunny-- it's -13 right now down there, but +25 at patrol HQ near the top of CB.

Switching subjects, I don't get skiing Mines. They don't look fun but they do look terrifying. Especially when one of them just slid a couple of days prior.

For some reason this cold snap seems to be hitting harder than the past ones, I must be getting soft. I think I am going to run over to Salida for a beer and a pizza and to warm up my bones.
It really doesnt seem that bad, I grew up in northern Wyoming and went to school in Laramie, sunny and no wind is not near as bad as when it -10 and the wind is howling across Wyoming.

Mines 1, Mines 2 and Vortex when timed right are a blast( especially Vortex). Unfortunately with Berthoud being the town bicycle of the front range, people are lured into consequential terrain before understanding the dangers of the continental snow pack.

Something like that. But we don't need to complexify thing that are relatively simple. A very large storm happened. There was a large natural and human triggered avalanche cycle. The specific terrain, elevation and location was named in the CAIC Forecast for the day. Dude man went full sent solo. The slope went big. He self rescued and called 911. The level of knowledge, understanding and decision making required to not be him is pretty low.

Large portions of the Northern Mountains, like the Front Range, Tenmile Range, and northern Mosquito Range are still at CONSIDERABLE (Level 3 of 5) danger and other areas are at MODERATE (Level 2 of 5) danger. Observers are reporting fewer avalanches and they’re becoming more difficult to trigger, but you can still trigger avalanches large enough to bury or kill you across the region.
You can trigger an avalanche on northerly, easterly, and south-facing slopes. You can trigger slides that only break in drifted snow, but the bigger hazard is slides that break in weak snow near the ground. On northerly and easterly aspects, weak snow is abundant close to the ground and slides can easily step down to this layer resulting in a large avalanche. You may not see any signs of instability before you trigger an avalanche. Low-angle and wind-sheltered slopes are safer options.
I'm nobody special and I've made plenty of mistakes over the years. I just hate that backcountry travel still has the air of superiority that makes it pretty unapproachable to many newbies and user groups. It's getting way better from the pro side with Awareness Classes and curiculums, KBFG, briefs on the radio and TV. I use see us crusty fucks as a problem.

    I skied The Jane yesterday.

It seems to me that the terrain openings are more aggressive than previous, the quality of the many made snow is much better ($millions in upgrades) and the groomers seem to GAF which is a change.

Is Pep's gone? I haven't been able to get an answer from everyone. I'll find out this afternoon.

Ha...I had to help with a Avalanche Awareness Class for the Comp Center Kids.

But my weekend window is still open. It'll shut shut soon and not open until late March. Except maybeeeeee Sunday afternoons.

Peps was closed yesterday but that didn't strike me as strange. Funny that I was joking yesterday that I've had less than 5 drinking in the Club Car my whole life. That place is for realtors, ski schoolers, city peeps and other movers and shakers.

My people go to Peps or Snoasis. I don't even feel welcome in Derailer.

I feel this. the whole scene, like everything about it, can just be such a turnoff to me sometimes.

Anyways I am glad we have the base we do, the skiing isn't bad but getting to the point where we could sure use some more snow and unfortunately it isn't looking too promising in that department. Seems like this incoming bit of weather has been downgraded aside from getting cold. A little snow and wind could go a long way for the basin at least.
