It means there is a 1%chance of this type of event....not that it only happens every hundred years. That being said, some all time CFS records are being shattered

From what i read, Boulder creek hit a flow where there is only a 1% chance it will hit that in any given year. 100 year flood.

ETA: and I totally call bullshit that there have been 3 floods like this in Boulder in your lifetime.

Call it like it is: 5 or 6 in a hundred. And the drain digging is just compounding someone elses problems down below. Hopefully a lot of "planners" heads are gonna roll - or better yet back fining of developers (if that was possible) who've now made a mess as big as the mining industries of years past.

Yep, the amount of rainfall that has inundated the area around Boulder is somewhere between a 200 to 500 year event.

Bullshit. Rainfall of this magnitude hasn't ever been seen in Boulder. The Boulder Creek flow today is twice as high as the previous record... That's saying something.

It may not have been seen in Boulder, but I think both the Big Thompson flood in 1976 and the Spring Creek flood in 1997 had similar amounts. I was in Ft. Collins that night, SW part of town received 14" that night, after a week of really wet weather.

Anyhow, vibes and thoughts to those dealing with damage. My area just got a voluntary evac here in Arvada. The damn at Leyden Lake upstream isn't supposed to fail, but spillover is occurring. I am up on a little ridge so may go down to see if people need help.

Yes. It might be a five hundred year flood based on our grandparents climate but things have changed. Civil Engineers are pushing hard for municipalities to design for the 500 year rain event rather than the old standard of 100 for this very reason.

Vibes to everyone in the area. Even if your house stays dry like ours did during our so called 500 year event this will impact you in many ways going forward. Best of luck.

I'm getting a kick out of seeing the instagram photos of CU kids doing slip'n'slides through the sewage-infested water. Dumbasses.

FWIW, contrary to popular belief, just because some white euro migrants and their descendants haven't seen something doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

Oh, I don't think people are saying this is the biggest ever for anywhere, just Boulder.

come on, dude, I think we are all pretty aware that we're talking recorded history; did it really need to be said? whether something may have happened 700 years ago isn't really the point.

Hasn't happened since 1893 when they started keep records. Boulder hasn't seen 12" of rain over the course of a month according to NOAA's records. So zappa, you're either REALLY fucking old, on crack, or you were living somewhere else when you saw that much rain.

It's just amazing that this much rain has fallen in CO. Other parts of the country see 3-4-5" of rain in single events alot. I've seen 9-11" when hurricanes or tropical storms run through. That is an almost unthinkable amount of rain for CO.

I got out and surveyed the damage this a.m.when there was a lull in the rain. It's insane. Foot bridge over bear creek collapsed, bridge under Lehigh and table mesa collapsed and take mesa is now a river.

When you consider that "recorded history" is nothing more than a pimple on a gnats ass, geologically/climatologically speaking and you have credible scientific organizations like the NWS referring to the current situation as "biblical", then yes, I think it is and it did.

edit: That doesn't mean it doesn't suck though...
