Iconic Arapahoe Basin Run Just Got a Little Less Tricky for Skiers
    Ian GreenwoodMar 15, 2023 1:14 PM EDT
Skiing and mountaineering, while two different disciplines, often crossover. On serious ascents or descents, it's not uncommon to see skiers whipping out ice axes, belay devices, and ropes. Some resorts offer up runs that play into this crossover, allowing skiers to enter lines that require rope usage during entry.

Arapahoe Basin, located in Colorado, has one such run called the "2nd Notch." During average snow years, you need to use a rope to enter the "2nd Notch." However, things at Arapahoe Basin are a bit different this season due to above-average snowfall. Check out this TikTok to learn more

Rappel or not, the "2nd Notch" is clearly a serious ski. Rock formations on both sides and sustained steepness make errors ill-advised. Luckily, @overmyer11 knew what they were doing, making tight, clean turns down the narrow couloir.

@c.olecarson, in the comments section, recounted another video involving a descent of "2nd Notch" that didn't go as well. "Bro you gotta watch peakreviews video on YouTube where he slides down this entire chute," they wrote. Kicking a shoe on "2nd Notch" sounds like a recipe for human pinball, with ample opportunities to bounce off sharp rocks. While unpleasant to think about, that's the risk you take when you get into committing terrain.

Another commenter, @mattschatz01, appreciated the quality of skiing on display, writing, "some nice turns!" Nice turns, indeed. Keeping it flowy in the gnar isn't easy.

Ultimately, this video illustrates that many resorts throughout the U.S. have benefitted from serious snowfall this season. While this might mean fewer opportunities for techy billy goating (like rappelling into a run), it also opens up new lines for those unwilling to break out the belay devices and harnesses.

Vail hasn't even hit 300" yet people are acting like it's a snowpocalipse. Also, while walking down a flight of stairs, if I touch the handrail, am I on rappel?

It’s hilarious that parroting IG posts and comments is now considered journalism.

It's a belay if two people are touching the rail at the same time, but only if you tell them loudly they're on belay. Bonus points if they let you check their "knot"

    A-Basin has 191" this year... it's hard to believe that's 98%.

Dry here. Dumping on the mountain. Open snow saying 85 inches next ten days. Tomorrow could be a big day in the Wolf Creek parking lot.
