^^^^or where you live to make good money and travel to proper backcountry destinations based on who has the best snow. At least the BC around here keeps you in shape and avy savvy.

Nah. Even the backcountry is gapered out.

Who knows, maybe this global warming business will be good for our snowpack someday. I'm working on expanding my carbon footprint.

It kind of makes sense that people get excited about skiing in October (after not doing it for months) the same way they get excited for golf/biking/gardening etc. in May (after not doing it for months). Its not the industry's fault.

I think its nice that this ski areas close in april/may because it forces me to get out and ski peaks when things are stable and the weather is beautiful.

It's just funny that people will drive an hour and a half, stand in line for 30 minutes....for one run. Then come April when the weather gets nice down on the Front Range, but the skiing is at it's peak, they're "over it". Same as it's always been tho...just a habit I find oddly interesting.

Even with temps reaching 60F @ 10k' yesterday, the snow on high, northerly aspects is hanging in there. MELT! It'd be nice to get a snowpack similar to '10/'11 again, but I won't hold my breath.

The late, great Steve Romeo produced a hilarious animated video about two bros.

One of them insisted on mountain biking early (mud) season and skiing early (rocks & &WROD) instead of following peak seasons.

I never understood this early season mania either - much as I'm chomping at the bit.

Yeah, I think that train has sailed. This was Keystone's facebook post on this date in 2010.

We didn't get snow until Dec 3rd, but by the 10th it was like a 60" base. Best year since I moved to CB in 1996. I'm totally down with another year like that.

That's all well and good, but lets face the music: '07 was an anomaly for CB and 10/11 was an anomaly for Colorado. Maybe it'll happening again, but those seasons were what - 1 in 20 years?

Keystone still says they will open Friday. Is that really possible at this point?

Maybe. They should have at least a few nights of snowmaking this week. But it'll be dire.

I'm guessing Luv still isn't open this weekend. Maybe mid-next week.

I doubt Keystone opens on time, all they've been able to get down so far are a few patches looks like. And even though it will be cold tonight it's supposed to warm right back up.

Maybe the upper off Montezuma lift. They've done that before I think. Copper had a good patch up top for the racers yesterday.

Thats a classic there. Did you do the long single track version all the way in to Poncha Springs?

I keep thinking back to 07/08 too. Totally dry until the end of November then seemingly non stop snow through the winter.

It's a bit more than that- 96/97, 07/08, and 10/11 all had snowpacks that went from zero to hero in a short amount of time. So far this year, there's still a chance, since there isn't a foot or two of crap on the ground right now. Even the high north faces are relatively dry, at least in the central mountains. Whatever happens this winter, I'm just stoked that for now it's awesome riding conditions, instead of the usual crap skiing crap biking conditions usually found at this time of year.
