The Basin skied great today. The wind was only occasionally unpleasant and it kept things from getting too soft. The east wall started to soften about 12:30 and was still skiing nice at 3 when we left.

This morning, Loveland Pass was closed for avi mitigation and a tipped tanker truck was blocking the road at Silverthorn/Dillion. Added some time to the drive from Denver, but it was just softening on the bottom half of the mountain for my 10 o’clock arrival.

Sounds like Breck is throwing in the towel early this weekend? And the Basin has closed Zuma and the Beavers. Not sure they’ll make it to June….

that's a bummer, was hoping to ski there this weekend, but without Pali, the Beavers, and East Wall hiking, not sure it's worth it.

    NOAA local discussion page:

    Some of
the mesonet data this morning was already showing locations around
Colorado Springs with dewpoint depressions near 100 degrees and RH
values of 1 percent. Given this, these excessively dry conditions

It wasn't that bad of a season for the San Juans, crazy how fast that ~400" at Wolf Creek is burning off.

Just the traverse, I think, no hiking (I was hoping for some north pole).

    Kinda wondering the same.

May look for a backcountry adventure for Sunday. No idea where I'll go, though; been out of the front range backcountry scene for a long time.

The better the freeze, the better the skiing. Right now it is 20deg. at my house, so that is a good start. I'll see if I can get a first hand report today. There is plenty of snow, its all about surface conditions. The downvalley bike trails are good to go if you want to make a full day of it.

been a long time since I clicked on NOAA without seeing that damn orange wind sock icon every single day.

Breck closing day should be fun, last year it was a hoot linking up all the puddles down low.

Anyone have ideas for a spring backcountry ski nearish to WP for a mediocre-fitness backcountry skier? Maybe something on Jones Pass?

I feel like there a secret spot on the way to WP that starts with a B and sounds like "Merthod". Some people of mediocre-fitness even shuttle the runs with motorized vehicles.

Of course Butler is there and an easy skin as well. I mean, are you looking for something outside of those three options?
