Snow in the Windian Peaks is completely windfucked. Except for places where it isn't:

This made me chuckle. All along I’ve been picturing the people that pumped up the Kickstarter - Patagonia, no less than 2-year old skis, a Bluebird Backcountry trucker hat, and sprinter van all came to mind. That stuff and the NEED to be able to be one of the first to post pics to insta and tell their friends how cool the new ski area is and how they just have to go!

He's much happier. Not used to having a dog that gets cold.

    1. the ski industry looks to milk money out of skiers every chance they get and if you think the ski industry and others aren't watching this experiment and licking their chops then you're a fool. The most powerful CEO in skiing once said that he treats skiing like a casino in that you charge people as much as you can until they stop paying.

    2. I get its on private property. I've skied many times for free on private lands (like like grizzly gulch in Utah) with permission from landowners. They typically are very accommodating in my experience when approached.

    3. I guess you guys also like paying for bottled water.

I think it would be lame if they started charging to access Berthoud Pass. That's easily become one of the more popular areas for ski touring in Colorado since that ski area folded. If you need to rely on avalanche control to ski in the backcountry you shouldn't be skiing in the backcountry to begin with.

What if they started charging $50/day to ski berthoud as a result of this? And restricted access to parts of the area like ski resorts now do around their ski area boundaries? I think that would suck.

You do realize that most ski resorts in the west operate on FS lands?

do you think charging for backcountry ski access will only be restricted to private land in the future if this is successful?

Do you think if this backcountry ski resort is successful, no one will approach the FS for a lease to operate a similar ski resort on public lands?

Um, there's some key words in my post that you missed, like "If" and "When".

But you could ski more terrain, on more days, more safely if there were people doing avy control there. I could see that having a draw. I skied Berthoud for many years when there were lift, patrol, shuttles, a snowboard park, and even a bar, and I gotta say, it was pretty nice. It is busier now than it ever was back then though.

Actually, I'd say the Colorado is the hardest place to ski good backcountry terrain mid winter due to the nature of the snowpack. A good mitigation program could help address that. Berthoud Pass has so much traffic that people talk about "stashes" because it "tracks out" so quick... just as one talks about a ski resort... because it was a ski resort for decades, then a cat ski op, and then so popular that FOBP was founded all the way back in 2003. So yea, I'd probably drop $300 on a season pass to Berthoud if they bombed and ran bus shuttles like they did up until 02/03 with the cat op.

If most of the tap water was undrinkable for 3/4 of the season because it was so dangerous, yeah, I'd consider paying for bottled water during those periods.

sounds like Berthoud pass already has the best avy mitigation program in place..... skier compaction.

I think you are overexaggerating the avy danger in Colorado a tad bit. I find enjoyable backcountry skiing just about every time I visit and I'm probably in colorado 3-4 times a year at random times throughout the year.

Do you realize how much of a dunce you are? Can you take laps in a corner? Try.

I'm being polite, BTW. The internet will finally be your reality check.

okay pal, and you're slingin' insults without even addressing the questions/concerns I raise. Rad dude, such a tough guy. maybe you should try spending more time skiing and less time trying to look like a skier on the internet. It's suckers like you that make skiing cheap for a guy like me.

Take your own advise and take a lap.

You either move to recreate or hide

People pay for bottled water because somebody zapped it and put it in a bottle. You pay for the packaging, not the contents. This is the skiing equivalent of bottled spring water. You can drink right from the source, or Eldorado Springs can put a label on it and make you feel like it's safer.

There will still be 200 million acres of USFS land to ski on even if somebody chooses to lease a few thousand in the inevitably doomed mission of trying a fee-based BC ski area. Relax, it's gonna be OK.
