Fresh snow, bluebird skies and Gaper Day on Saturday.....a triple whammy......knew the parking situation was going to be busy. I hit the traffic backup halfway between Keystone and the Basin (LP was closed) and it took me an extra 15 minutes to get there. I parked at 7:20 and was already at the back of the High Noon lot. The base area was a total and complete shitshow.....the skiing however, was glorious and uncrowded. Gotta love it when most everyone is just there to party. Hot take......the 'skiers/riders' going the hardest on Gaper Day are the biggest gapers of all. I'm sure most of 'em had Ikon passes.
Old's Cool.

Looks like a big warmup coming after the next storm. Highs predicted to be close to 60ºF in Summit. Hello spring.

Dust was visible at a basin and things got a bit crusty out there. Also cold. I did not last long.

Noticeable red dust layer here in Routt, near Buff and also on Rabbit Ears, all aspects. Gross.
Fun turns with the pup today even though I'm technically still in covid-isolation. Felt good to get out. This may be the last of it for us after tonight, sure is looking like it.

I don't recall many of these dust events in the 90's or even early 2000's, but seems like last 10 years or so it's become an annual thing. Maybe it's related to increased drilling/development in the desert destroying the cryptobiotic crust. Memory is a fickle thing though, so was kind of wondering if there was any data around this increasing in frequency.

The site is a little funky. I found this link too:

I blame the fallow bean fields near Dove Creek for a lot of it.

One being a dory builder originally from Salida? I’m afraid that won’t do much to reverse the idiocy.
McPhee reservoir was created by damming the Dolores to deliver water to the bean fields by a network of canals. Boaters can’t run the lower Dolores to conserve water for bean farming. Fishing is no bueno. After the harvest, the fields lay fallow in a high desert area of lots of wind. The wind deposits dust in La Platas, San Juans and beyond. The snow melt accelerates creating an early runoff. McPhee and the canals dry up. The bean fields don’t get water.

On the plus side, rumor has it the lower Dolores will be able to finally open for boaters. That’ll be a shitshow.

The lower Dolores is going to run this year and it will be an all time shitshow down there when the first release happens... and I'll be there myself. I hope someday the bean farmers get their heads out of their asses and stop letting the lower Dolores die in front of their eyes, but that's as likely as pig flying.
Didn't see as much dust as I expected to see on my morning walk, but I didn't get into the easterly aspects that were catching all the snow that blowing the past week. Fingers crossed it just all blew to Kansas.
