Review of 07-08 Scott Santiago Mission
My stats
5 ft 6
150 Lbs - soaking wet with shoes on.
Been skiing for 25 years.
My skis- Scott Santiago Mission - 178 cm - Naxo 21 Binders
Ok so for starters I bought these skis on whim online for super cheap.
I know that it can be dangerous buying a ski without demoing them first, but in this case I just went for it...I have skiied on them for about a month.
First two weeks in Blower Pow @ Vail.
also on the EC in Rain, Bluebird day on Groomers, DOC, Bulletproof, and Death Cookies.
I will say this unequivocally this is ski is a quiver of one. The 178 is the perfect ski for me in that it really makes me work and it is veryresponsive in all types of conditions.
Skiing in variable [going from untracked to tracked, to cut up groomers, back to heavy choppy pow] conditions the missions ruled. I found I could charge aggressively in a very neutral stance. The width at the tip and the tail made up for the slightly narrow waist and though there was some sinkage underfoot in deep pow pockets the nose would shoot me right back to the surface.
I was equally shocked by their performance in the bumps. They are a stiff ski, but soft enough that you can really get a rythym with em in the bumps.
Scotts dual sidecut really shines on the groomed shit. These skis will do anything you want. Maching at top speed they dont chatter at all, I felt very comfortable throwing huge Big Mountain aggressive turns down trails with steep and consistent fall lines. You know that feeling you get on the east coast when you are bombing down heading right for the trees at the edge of the trail, as you initiate the turn you pray to god that your edges iniatiate and grab the snow so that you don't end up a traction...Yeah well I never once felt that this ski would falter. 100% confidence. You can put them on rails and link big Swoopy GS turns down the whole mountain. Its as thought the ski want to turn itself all you need to do is initiate.
EC Trees. Again I was impressed with their quickness and response. Spent a few days poking around n the Bypass woods at stowe + partridge woods + 3 cliffs / Octopus Garden at MRG and the Missions killed it. Was able to get them around very quickly. However, the minute I let up they started getting away from me a little. Technically I guess I should be on something shorter, but I am used to 183 Line Motherships out west and 178 Rossi vipers for years...so this ski is very refreshing.
For Touring I was quite surprised...the MO on the ski is that it is a little heavy...but my setup w/ Naxo's is actually not as heavy as I initially thought.
Pros: Versatility
Cons: Prob want a bigger ski under foot for Hero / Targhee type Snow. + Bigger ski for bigger mtns.
Overall: A perfect quiver of one, or East Coast Ski that can satisfy regardless of the conditions.

The Conditions:
7-10 in of fresh on top of frozen crud/hardpack. The snow was resionably light for the PNW. And could be found up to 12in deep if you know where to go. (march 1st at crystal I think).
The skis:
the megawatts in whatever size they come in, some where around 185, mounted with look/rossi demo bindings on the line.
Skier:
5'9" 160lbs,
agressive skier, likes to go fast but not out of control, Comfortable up to 50degree slopes, confident on slopes up to the high 50s. Cliffs up to 30ft, 40-50 if the landing is good and there is a camera. Regular Set up: XXL's w/p15's on the line
Review:
When I first got to try the skis I had high expectations and was expecting alot from the ski. First I took them through some 8 inch tracked powder, they were very fun in these conditions and allowed me to be much more relaxed then I normally am with the XXL's. Next I went to some trees where the snow was 10-12 inches deep and untracked. The skis did fairly well in here. About what I would expect from any rockered pow ski, but fun none the less. Until I opened up as I left the skis into a more open bowl, still relativly untracked. However once I started to ski more aggressively, the skis started to suck, and the faster I went the more they sucked. while they are soft they are not very damp and defiantly unstable for a 125mm ski. To be honest I would not feel comfortable taking them on any drops over 15ft, they just did not seem stable enough. As I hit the lower elevations and the snow turned to hard pack the skis became just unfun and very slugish with no edge power. Opening up was simply not an option. Upon hitting the traverse at the bottom the skis were almost unable to hold and edge at all and traversing became hard and a big pain in the ass.
Overall: A fine ski if you like slow powder turns and don't plan on using them in anything less then 6in of fresh. Otherwise there are many better options out there, these skis defiantly have a speed limit no matter what the conditions. and are just a big pain in the ass in anything other then powder.
I was expecting more from BD, especially given that I think the Zealot and Verdict are some of the best skis out there.
Technical stand point:
What the fuck were they thinking with the tips the way they are. If they were willing to bend the tips a little more they could have gotten the same effect with much more effective edge.
Way to soft. they might as well have rockered the tail and given it better sw performance, the tail is so soft that it does almost nothing. you are really skiing with just the edge under your foot and nothing else.

Interesting review. I also ski a LP XXL 194 - pretty much all over the mountain & most of the time. I have only fondled the Megawatt but I also thought that they seemed way too soft overall and seemed to be a pure pow/soft snow quiver ski. I was hoping the Megawatts to have a flex pattern more toward something like the Verdict (right again, Verdict & Kilowatt are sick BD skis). Oh well, maybe they will tweak it in the coming years. At least their new boots should hit the bullseye.

RE: Nordica Blowers.
Given the soft feel and soft tip would you rate these a more reasonable choice for a heavy tele setup?

All reviews by yours truly.
