Summit, your comments about the quality of the Keystone ski patrol gave me a flashback to December 1997.
I was skiing Keystone at night with a girlfriend, just a normal night, few laps on the ganjala, couple beers shared. It wasn't a crowded night at all. I was cruising along all alone on my side of the run lost in thought when out of the corner of my eye I see this guy come flying over my shoulder, I slow up a bit to see where and how this guy is going to land, he comes straight down out of the sky, he had hit this kicker we called the whale's tail, it was where 2 runs came together, they had built a sort of separation burm to keep people from skiing into eachother when merging, anyway this guy had obviously hit this thing at maximum speed and I will never forget the sound his skis made as he landed, it was like an explosion. So he basically falls straight down out of the sky collapses on impact and goes skidding on his side down into some trees still at maybe 50 mph.
I flagged down my girlfriend, who was behind me on the opposite side of the run and sent her down to get patrol. She leaves and I slowly make my way into the dark woods where I last saw the skier. I get maybe 20 feet into the trees and I hear moaning. I unstrap my board and start walking toward the moans, I find the guy face down in the snow with his feet uphill above him all tangled up in these little pecker pole trees. Without moving him, I clear away some of the snow from around his face so he can breath. After maybe a minute he regains consciousness and tries to squirm a little and then lets out a cry of pain. I calm him down by saying patrol is on the way, you need to stay right where you are, you may have a broken back or neck and you cannot try to move. He then says that his feet hurt, and asks me to loosen his boots, I take this as a very good sign that this guy can feel his feet, and to buy some time I unbuckled his boots. Next thing you know here comes ski patrol, I hear them calling up above me on the run, I yell back and down they come. From there they take over, load the guy on a backboard and take him down. I stayed with the guy while they're doing all this, turns out he's an Aussie. He had just flown into Denver that morning and it was the first run of his first trip to the states. He actually said to me, "You must think I'm the stereotypical crazy Aussie," and he laughed, which I admired under the circumstances.
Anyway I called patrol the next day. They said he broke his back and had been taken to a hospital in Denver, but they did say that they didn't think there would be any paralysis, so I felt pretty good about that. Anyway, Keystone ski patrol was very impressive.

We have a big concert on the last day of classes every year at UBC called Arts County Fair. It's always a complete shit show, and everyone's wasted. Of course, they pat you down at the door to make sure you don't have booze or weed or anything. There's cheap beer inside, so it's kind of pointless to bring booze, but people still try. Last year, some security guard woman started patting me down without warning. I didn't really take offense, I was more just surprised. I thought the best reaction was to start patting her down. She wasn't very pleased, and asked me what the hell I thought I was doing. I told her I was "just easin' the tension baby, just easin' the tension." She just laughed and stopped patting me down and let me in.

1. This was NOT private land. This was public land. It's USFS land, not Disneyland or a bar or a concert. So why should I be searched to be outside?
2. Their invasive policy completely failed in its purpose of stopping drunk skiers.
With that said, i would have put up the same fight had i actually had some buds or booze on me. Otherwise, whatever. I'll admit, never got searched on the ski sloaps though. But with a big shindig going on, doesnt suprise me. we always buried out booze at the bottom of the hill and smoked out bowls at the top. So it was never an issue for me.
Does your hypocrisy know no bounds, sir?
Right... they were afraid the terrorists were going to attack Keystone. That's why they had civilian event employees looking for and confiscating alcohol and drugs (or turning them back and hotlisting their passes). I didn't realize Osama was going after ski resorts. I guess that would have explained the metal detectors and x-ray machines. Oh wait...
It's like any large scale event now - a little frisk. Go on your way. No biggie. If they were not doing it, things could get really blatant. Yeah, proper explanation signage in explaining why?/what? would have been a good call.
Were the confiscating water/vodka bottles?
Why create such a fuss? There are other battles against 'The Man' to be fought.
Are you just pissed it was a guy fondling you and not a girl? Is that the real issue?
If you don't have a problem with being searched anytime you go anywhere, then you probably don't have a problem with the NSA reading your emails, the FBI tapping your phones, or being pulled over by the police for no reason other than to make sure you aren't doing anything naughty. It is all in the same vein.
As for what battles I fight... I am not out to fight "the man." I've never been to a protest, much less ever been arrested in my life. However, I do choose to object if the ski hill I live at and have skied for 24 years puts in place a policy that I find harassing and I strongly disagree with. Why would you have a problem with that?Last edited by Summit; 12-01-2007 at 11:52 AM.

^^^Name another resort in the area that is open after 4PM? Night skiing is fun! I had a lot of fun last night until it got overcrowded, icy, and crashy.
I can't tell if you are joking, but I think you might be serious. What exactly did I do that was tase-worthy. Do you believe customers emphatically voicing complaints to business management should be tazed?
There was a Sherrifs sargent there to make arrests if they turned up drugs. They have tasers. He seemed completely bored throughout my exchange. He didn't even move. He looked cold though.
While you've never missed a chance to bag on me over the past 4 years, I would point out that the only two people I "wasted my breath" on were:
1. Pat Cambell, the COO of Keystone - The person responsible for the policy and the person whom complaints should be directed to.
2. The guy who grabbed me without warning or permission.Last edited by Summit; 12-01-2007 at 12:09 PM.

I think if we applied the police oppositional/ compliance flow chart bullshit thingy we would clearly see that you should have been tasered several times.

This seems like one of those situations where both sides could have done things better. Seems to be to be based on the concept of "do you want to be right, or do you want to be affective?" The keystone people shouldn't have searched you the way they did, but had not taking on the "i protest authority" type attitude then things would have been different.

Sorry about the rest of it, but I am so tired of people saying this. Yes, it is public land in the sense that the government owns it. But it is LEASED to Keystone, so they may treat it like their land. Would you be ok with your landlord walking into your apartment at any time of the day, saying he owns the land and can do what he wants? No, because you signed a lease whihc gives you the right of possession, which means for most purposes (not all), you can treat the land as yours and actually exclude the landlord. Keystone has a right of possession, and can treat the land as its own. Get over it, stop screaming about "public land" and go to the backcountry if you don't like it.
I am not condoning the rest of what happened, but you had no special rights because the federal government happens to own the land in question."fuck off you asshat gaper shit for brains fucktard wanker." - Jesus Christ
