Jamieson: Hey Lee, how big is this drop?
Lee: How would I know? I have no depth perception. Just go .. what could possibly go wrong?
Now the hard part - dodging the Toby tracks ... zoom zoom!

Actually, I meant with a little better camera.....
I'm assuming it was on auto and the speed slowed down when he hit the shadow. mebbee.
But you certainly do get in position to nail some good shit, Lee.

nope - it was on manual at ISO 100 1/2000 f4.5. but it probably should've been taken say with a 200mm lens to get the true money shot in the sense the original picture has toby as a small figure. But I figure that the more pictures I take, hopefully the more I'll improve. I'm still trying to learn how to master that 50mm. It's a very demanding little lens.
I would like something like a 20d but am not convinced that getting better tools will make me better - just need more practise.

Ok that's quite enough shots. These are just powder turns at the bottom of Flute where the snow became light again and lost its touch of wind effect.

I had a sweet 1.4 50mm on an old A4 hand wind single shot that I just loved.
You can get close with the 50. I understand now that you blew it up big.
You can drop that speed down considerably and gain some aperature and depth.
I wouldn't go beyond 750. 5/500 is a standard for sun on snow.
You'll have to drop your speed to get the light anyways for the days coming.
If you're gonna shoot manual, an ambient light meter is well worth the money.
edit: way to slay, toby.

Dumb question
I wanted the fast shutter speed to freeze Toby and make it sharp. I think you're saying that having more depth might have made the shot better? If so, looking at the shot i tend to agree with that.
What do you mean "5/500 is a standard for sun on snow"?
Actually i should move this to photo/video as i could use critique

nah......and there's plenty of people that know more about this stuff than me. I just wanna see you get the shots. 5 on the aperature, 500 shutter. Standard sunny ski day camera setting. You don't need that 2000 speed. You want light. Come the short days, you'll want as fast a lens as you can get or you'll be dropping down to 80 speed or less to get enough light. More light in the lens allows you more speed in the shutter. See what the camera wants to do on auto to get an idea of where you might want to be or how it adjusts the two settings in different lighting.
edit: i apologize for interrupting such excellent stoke.

Nice work guys.
Lee, those shots are pretty damn good, even if they aren't tack sharp. You have a great eye for light and your shots are really well composed for being restricted to just a 50mm prime.

ha! it was all good until I skied past a snowblower gun. That hurt. My goggles finally cleared up by the time we got to the flute. That was nice, I could finally ski AND see where I was going!
Great day guys, let's do that again! Oh and awesome pics Lee. I'll start bringing my D70 so we can get twice the shots.

Lee, I think there is some wrong with that lens on your camera because many of those shots are back focused, which is why the skier is not "tack sharp" in them.
Have a look at the first bunch of photos where you shot each skier doing a similar line. The camera has focused most often on the trees in the distance and not the skiers. Even the first sunny photo of someone standing with the runs in the background it looks like the focal point is way in the distance.
Did you use any different autofocus setting, otherwise something is wonky with that lens. That money shot with the backlit snow even looks like the camera focused on the slope behind the skier.
Have a look through your original fullsize images and let me know if what I think I am seeing on these screen size pix is accurate. It seems like either that new lens is not playing nice or you camera's autofocus was having issues, because your photos are usually dead on.
Edit: Lee, in looking closer at those first photos I now see that some tree tops close to the skier are in focus, so the issue might be motion blur and not focus? (What was the shutter speed?) But it still seems at least some photos are back focused. Is that a new lens or a used one?Last edited by Eldo; 11-28-2007 at 10:34 AM.
