TR: Austria Season Opener - Tauplitz 17-18 Nov

Skiers: 2-czech, Pivko, horizon, and two American Brians from Prague (let's call them Brian X and Brian Y)

(sorry for the large pix, I resized the hell out of them, obviously not enough. I'll try to update them tomorrow).

This TR must start with mad propz for 2-czech, who lent me a pair of excellent Prior skis, drove me overnight from Prague to Tauplitz while I drifted in and out of consciousness, and on Sunday drove me to Salzburg airport while his girlfriend (she of Praxis skis crossed over her chest fame) was waiting for him at home.

Thanks man, hope to return the favour! (for instance, I could drive you from London to Milton Keynes…)

We leave Prague at 11 pm. 2-czech's car has a natural aversion to left turns: one of the rear wheels starts to make a banging noise, a bit like an armour-wearing rabbit on heat. That means slower driving. Then there's 2-czech's confusing navigation skills: first he inspires boundless confidence (though he's using a low-res Cubist map), then he suddenly looks as lost as a penguin in Sahara, and then he recovers masterfully and somehow finds the right way. Captivating stuff.

We get to Tauplitz at 5am and wake up Pivko, who jogs half a mile to show us the way to the house (and then jogs back in front of the car, as there's no room inside).

But this didn't stop us waking up at 8am. Here's 2czech, fitting my boots on the Priors

We finally get to the top of the mountain. Are we ready for all this?

    Yes we are!

    Pivko has a go:

    2czech follows:

    So do I:

Brian X gets the money pow shot:

More than half of these are our tracks:

    And all of these:

We have a compulsory goulasch lunch. On the way out, I notice this poster. Seems like the land of lederhosen and moustaches is immune to sexual innuendo…

    Day 2

Light snow and overcast sky – this one's for the trees.

Brian X looks like he's ready to roll into bed. Turns out he hasn't slept at all and has an upset stomach. This leads to Interesting Conversation No. 1 of the day:
"horizon, what kind of doctor are you?"
"I'm not a doctor, my wife is"
"Oh, sorry. What kind of wife is she?"

We notice some yummy tree skiing left and right of the chairlift. The only problem is that the last third of the chairlift runs horizontal / descending, and we don't feel like hiking back for half an hour. A short discussion follows. Feeble opposition is brushed away. This is what we do for the next two runs (although we reckon we jumped with more steeze than Brian Y):

It's worth it though – have a look at 2czech ripping it:

Brian Y is enjoying the goods, too:

Then, on the third run, the chap from the chairlift comes at us talking at Mauser speed and wants to take away our passes. They must have figured out that more punters were getting on the chair than getting off at the other end. We feign ignorance of the law. This is tricky, since Brian Y speaks fluent German and there are big-lettered signs plastered on the chairlift, saying something like "Du will nicht Jumpen Out of The ChairLiften If Du wunscht Deine Balle Keepen Intakt" – or words to that effect. However, Brian – a writer by trade – is a master of sweet-talking and we escape without a fine. The only thing the Austrian extracts from us is – no, not teeth - a solemn promise not to do it again. We even get a half smile from him. Somehow this is more scary.

Fortunately, there are more trees available.

    Here's Pivko:

Interesting Conversation No. 2 of the Day:
"2-czech, just remembered to ask you. What DIN are my Naxos set at?"
    "12, I don't like pre-releasing"
"Oh, I usually ski at 9…"

Later, Pivko plays the professional photographer and gets some good shots of me:

Then again, that line was the easy one. The tough one was the one that he (and 2-czech) had done a moment ago (Pivko starring in the photos):

End of 2nd day: we count arms and legs, and find all in place and functioning appropriately.

    Great skiing guys, thanks.

Horizon thanks for the great TR. It was pleasure to ski with you and 2-czech.

I got a massage scheduled today to work out some of kinks caused by all my double ejections on sunday. I may have been just a little too excited for opening weekend

    can't wait for more!

The next airports are Vienna, Salzburg and Linz, the latter is served by Ryan Air via London-Stansed (sp?). Tauplitz is easily reached via train from both Salzburg and Linz (main international line Vienna-Munich). You have to change the train in Attnang-Puchheim. Travel time from Linz or Salzburg is about 2,5 h (about 4 from Vienna).

Tauplitz is among the Austrian resorts with probably the most annual snowfalls (in February 5-7 m of snow in is quite common).
