I tried to make some sense of this phenomenon many years ago, but never finished. Sorry that this reads like a junior high essay, but maybe this thread can benefit from words as well...

Fresh tracks are the ultimate preservation of joy. A surfer's wake lasts a millisecond. The dust unfurled by knobby tires quickly blows away in the wind. But snowy tracks wrought by skis or snowboard survive as a kind of time-echo, a physical representation of a virtuous deed done on Earth.

Fresh tracks are marks of individuality. You made them. They scream for attention in a quiet, confident way. They are marks of your existence and purpose in life, fleeting as they may be.

Fresh tracks are a skier’s ultimate status symbol. You may not be a stock broker or drive a Hummer, but if you can slice and dice a field of white you've earned something well beyond money.

Fresh tracks are the ultimate graffiti. They raise eyebrows. Inspire. Mark territory. They can be offensive to some when left in the wrong areas. But to freedom- and mountain-loving beings, they always telegraph a positive message.

Fresh tracks are the ultimate renewable resource. The medium in which they exist is naturally recycled to a pristine state over and over again, and when they're gone, they leave no trace.

Fresh tracks are inspiring. They spark excitement in our spirits. Creating them spawns a revelry all its own, and viewing them from afar a second, third, and fourth time increases, not dimishes, their enjoyment.

Fresh tracks are symbols of hard work and good judgment. They result from a string of good decisions that place you safely in the right place at the right time. Fresh tracks never happen by accident.
