It's all about the spacing. About 1 cm clearence all around from the other holes and you'll be OK. More is better. Less- you're taking chances in my opinion.

Energizer claims their "Ultimate Lithium" batteries are good to -40 F, unfortunately only available in AA and AAA right now I think. Maybe worth doing a search for similar technology in your size.
