It's the bushings that wear out in the sway bar linkage and the play cause the loud thunk. I really don't think it's critical to fix it right away (like, say, a wheel bearing), but it's super easy...

It's the sway bar link. They are relatively cheap and super easy to replace. This is a common problem on that age Taurus/Sable.
