Agree on the camber thing, look for the least amount/softest camber. Sure you will lose some glide, but for the kind of off trail skiiing you are doing, one mostly just shuffles...

The Pierre Gignoux race boots have a lace up system that works this way. The boots don’t even have a buckle. On the clog.

Often, unresovlable heel hold down is due to lack of ankle dorsiflexion. No matter how tight the boot is the lack of dorsiflexion just levels the heel up.
