Interesting to see the rise in the ten year treasury. I have seen a lot of cope about this all being a play to lower interest rates. If the government acts like this at the highest level and makes completely incoherent arguments about trade deficits being tariffs then there is a palpable doubt in the faith and credit of the US government, not to mention that the stupid tariff policy is massively inflationary.
Also disappointing, a reporter asked President Trump about agreeing to the EU's Ursula von der Leyen offering zero-for-zero tariffs. Trump said no, saying the EU exists to "damage the United States with trade." It looks like Trump is becoming emboldened by these offers. He likes the offers but isn't negotiating. It's anybody's guess what the endgames is here. One possibility is a reverse Nixon shock, a new Bretton Woods. If that's the goal then it's not enough to cut deals with individual countries or even the EU. The goal is a grand bargain with most countries, maybe eighty or more (Bretton Woods was 44 countries). It might work. We urgently need a shooting yourself in the foot emoji if it doesn't
If you're pretending that tariffs calculated based on trade instead of other countries' tariffs are "reciprocal" you should at least tell us how much more liberated you feel since Liberation Day.

The reason why he's hitting nearly every nation, almost 200 countries at the same time, is not out of "calculated" economics.but instead for geopolitical reasons à la the Nixon shock back in the 1970s. Trump and co know they're going to hurt the U.S. but they also believe they can hurt their adversaries more.
I don't think it's possible to unleash something like this and then predict what's going to happen. To me it looks like an own goal. This is not OK, and we shouldn't pretend it is. While statists might disagree, I don't thing one person can centrally plan an economy let alone the world trading system

The missing piece, I think/guess, is that it's not enough to enact zero-for-zero tariffs with America; allies must also enact tariffs on China at the same rate as America. Trumplandia wants to force countries to choose sides. If Europe or Canada or Australia etc., want to be part of the dollar based trading and security defense umbrella then they have to play along. The world in which countries got free American defense especially naval defense of free navigation and also free trade with whoever they like is over. Now, countries will have to choose one or the other
I'd be fine with a Democratic/Free bloc vs a China/Russia/Iran trade bloc, but I am not seeing that coherent strategy in the tariff deluge

It would have to be a very big trade in today’s world. You’re more likely to get fucked over by your BD/firm, they’ll shop it to their prosperity desk first, then those fuckers will skirt the Chinese wall on the way to bathroom and lift the stock leaning on your order. I done it a thousand times, legally.
