I've tried to think of the right way to articulate this. But, having done it, I bristle at the idea of condo/apt living in the USA (pseudo-urban/suburban). But in most euro settings, no problem. There's... I dunno, an undertone of confrontation baked into the US. Gotta get yours. The same mindset that people are going to gorge themselves and cut in line at the all-you-can-eat. Whereas the euro set seems to have it worked out, more congenial or at the very least, less personal about it. Maybe it's because its more common place... being raised in density living from the get go? The Brown Ranch development is going to take much much longer than anybody in town is addressing. It'd be nice if town would look to Miller Ranch in E-town for comparison. A good mix of townhomes, condos, as well as SFH, parks, daycare. They have yet to even bring it up as something to look at. And Eagle County is doing way more for their locals in terms of down-payment assistance or grants, buying properties to add to deed-restricted inventory, etc. Summit too.
Meanwhile, old timers here are voicing their discontent in the local paper about how horrid hundreds of condensed rooftops will look in the future. But each one of those folks have 2 or 3 kids and/or are so consumed with the right-leaning ways they want to ban abortion. Uh, that means more people you dumbasses, the math doesn't add up. And these are the same people that are pushing back on city council's attempt to limit STR licenses on condo properties in certain neighborhoods in condo land. It's all messed up. Pitkin and Eagle Counties are way, way more progressive in making change where it counts and providing a fighting chance against massive, growing income inequity.
The subsidized condo units that YVHA built on the west side of town for middle-income folks will be renting around $2100-3200 a month, likely more. And they don't even get a tiny freaking deck or patio. Looks like an office building.
There's a crappy trailer for sale along the river, $275K. That's not including the lot rent. Ha.
It's too bad that change won't be happening for locals as quick as they are able to transform the resort right now. It's going to be a few years before they even break ground at Brown Ranch, a decade or more before it's complete. Ridiculous.
