On a per capita basis Canada and the US have a similar number of long guns (rifles and shotguns). The big differences are carry permits are hard to come by and firearms must be stored unloaded and locked up in the case of handguns.
It used to be easy to get a wilderness carry permit but the grizzly lobby put a stop to that.
I started the conveyance permit process many years ago. Much of the ease depending hugely on the local po-po; if the local detachment chief wasn't on board, or didn't like you personally, forget it. And if you were successful in one community of residence, if you moved you then had to deal with the new detachment (all restricted paperwork had to be submitted to the new detachment where you were moving to and everything had to be signed off before that gun moved residences). Cops don't really like non-cops having one of their primary privileges here.
Here's the real pisser: I just noticed the Blue Jays' series in Seattle is August 13-15. That means people in Vancouver won't be able to drive down for that series as things stand now.
When the Jays play in Seattle tons of western Canadians will attend.
I never understood BC's love of the Blue Jays over the Mariners. Even though the Mariners play just a few hours away they rather root for a team that is 4,000 km away. But this thread has opened by eyes to how pathologically nationalistic Canadians are.
I miss going to the states, we aren't all scared of the border opening or Americans.
I think the Jays are different because they're Canada's only major league baseball team.
I have to say though that a shotgun against a polar bear charging at 30 miles an hour?
Maybe.
I have a friend the ski guides in Norway and above the polar circle they have to carry a gun.
He never had to use one, but in his opinion, it's 50-50 wether you shoot the bear or he eats you.

"In any event bear spray is more effective than a firearm"
Really? Let me know how effective bear spray is on a Polar Bear from your experience. At least they are white so you can see which miniscule portion you blasted with pepper spray as they toss you through the air.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to tell me about the experience when your less than perfect aim fails to stop the bear in its tracks and instead it enrages the bear who doesn't die until after it lands on you, crushing you to death.
OTOH the cloud of bear spray doesn't enrage the bear, instead it causes the bear to stop its charge because it does not want to go further into that cloud of irritant.
If you're unlucky enough to be attacked by a fucking polar bear maybe it's just your time.
Carry a 5 shot defender for bear protection - Seems to match up with what I've read about folks who regularly travel in the arctic where those huge animals eat everything that's not them.
While I've never stared down a Polar bear, I think even Yosemite Sam would have a 20% chance of surviving compared to pepper spray.
The issue is coordinating a sensible and applicable policy on proof of vaccination requirements, when many states, including key border states, are fundamentally opposed. The Biden administration seems reasonably well informed, but negotiating with morons in a rigged system can’t be easy.
That the US has the practical means to end the pandemic, and yet is choosing not to out of fealty to an inane ideology, is a massive own goal.
