Exactly. They're (the government) all over the place here. Seems like they are using these hoops as a deterrent to crossing the border, which is so stupid. If they want to discourage cross-border travel, then close the damn border. Require a list of exceptions if you want - whatever. Yeah, that's a reasonable point, but I think it's also reasonable to have a point of control where people get tested because they might not know otherwise. What is the harm in administering the instant tests?

They're not instant and they're not free. It takes 15-20 minutes to get a result, you need space to store people waiting for a result and you need staff to administer the test. The test kit is around $10. If someone tests positive then what? That's another logistical problem.Quote:

Yes back here for atleast this winter. Bike riding has been good but im still not sure how the ski search will go. Friends are on "BC" gear that are basically xc skis w metal edges so beta interpretations vary

i think the biggest issue would probably be that the border people wouldn’t want to do it.
I went on a cruise in October and they had a pretty efficient way of handling the pre-boarding testing. You took the rapid test and then they marshaled everyone into a waiting room with a couple giant screens. Once your test ID came up on the screen you were able to proceed to the check-in area. Certainly the same kind of thing could be done at the border, but it would require the facilities and the staff, and that's probably a significant hurdle. With their current process they don't need any additional staff at the border.
To those who were randomly selected + double vaccinated, did they ask you to isolate until you got your results back? I've been hearing that they're not requesting that but it seems like the guidelines says you need to? Confused whether to plan on hanging around Vancouver for a few days till I get the result or whether I can just do the test and go onwards to Whistler and wait instead.
Yeah the guidelines do seem to have some double speak. If you enter fully vaccinated with a negative pcr test within 72 hours and are randomly selected for a test you are free to go awaiting results.
Yeah, and by the time I got my results I was already going to be returning to the states the next day anyway. Waste of time and Canadian taxpayer money. I bet the companies doing the tests are raking it in though.

Sorry if I've missed this -- but if test is required for after entry for everyone soon ("The Government of Canada is increasing the number of fully vaccinated travellers being selected for testing to reach 100% of vaccinated travellers in the coming weeks.") -- how long are those test typically to turn around? I'm supposed to fly into a hut and need to figure how far ahead of time I need to cross.
Maybe I missed it, fully vaccinated US citizen. Will get a PCR test 72 hours before entry. Likely need a rapid test at the border.
Do I need a test to come BACK into the states?

I spent a long time researching and trying to understand this requirement. I cross the border from WA every weekend to ski Whistler so I have a big stake in this.
Based on the articles below, the mandatory test + quarantine until negative result only applies to travel by air. It is worded vaguely, but after reading the articles, my interpretation is that the second sentence applies to people who fit the description in the first sentence.
As in, fully vaccinated travelers (who have been in any country other than the Canada and the US in the 14 days prior to entry to Canada) who are selected for arrival testing must quarantine.. until they receive a negative test result.
One article specifically says:

Also as of November 30, all air travellers entering Canada from any country other than the U.S. must take a COVID-19 test at the airport they land in, regardless of their vaccination status.
Those passengers must then self-isolate until a negative test result is received.

US citizens exempt from air traveler mandatory testing + quarantine.
No immediate plans to mandate testing + quarantine for land travel but it is a possible future option.

Yes I think you're right. The lack of an effective transition between those two sentences creates the confusion, but for now it appears quarantine until result is not necessary for land travelers who have only bern in the U.S. or Canada. Seems like it would be very impractical if not impossible to enforce anyway, since so many trips (like skiing) are too brief to matter.
I think what's happening in the real world is inbound passengers on international flights (other than those from the U.S.) take a test upon arrival. They are not allowed out of the airport (or whatever the quarantine area is) until their negative results comes back. I've heard that means waiting 2-3 hours typically.

The question is is any of this doing any measureable good? As somebody mentioned upthread, it would be significantly simplified if they just allowed travel for vaccinated people between the U.S. and Canada with no testing. IMO travelers have very little up close indoor contact with locals anyway. I had virtually none during my visit, just quick dealings with employees that would seem very unlikely to result in transmission.
