What is up with barber shops booking appointments like they are hair salons. I am not looking for a cut, color, extensions, blowout half a day $1,000 experience here.

Yeah, it took me a long time to get used to booking my appointment with our local barber shop. Not to mention they are usually booked out at least a week in advance. But I do it now, because they are good at what they do. Price keeps going up, now they want a card before hand, and even ask for a tip before the haircut even takes place, which is weird, but you can opt out and tip after.Quote:

Still just walk-ins at my current barber, but I've gotten the hairy eyeball from the two younger barbers who thought they new better than me what's right for my head/face. Even when I politely decline their chair they get all butt hurt. The two older guys that are more reliable smile and wink at each other when I wait for them.

I gave up on having someone else cut my hair 25yrs ago. Barbers in small towns are few and far between, and the stylists in hair salons were like your two young barbers - they don’t listen to what the customer wants and treat your head as their plaything for their own self expression. And then they want an exorbitant tip.
Scissors, comb, shears and a mirror. Sit down for 0.5hrs every 4 or 5weeks and trim it up. I’ve been lax on the beard trim this past season though. Time to get a bit more aggressive.
The pandemic got me back to just buzzing my own hair. The rapidly escalating price at the barber 2 blocks from my office was annoying.
A trendy new “barbershop” opened in my hood a couple months ago. Geezers need not apply. 70 plus tip for a haircut. Appt needed. No thanks. Id rather get scalped in the old Russia place a few blocks away that still charges 15 and listens to what you want.Quote:

I cut my own. To blend, just blend upwards by pulling away as you swipe up at around the same spot at the same angle all the way around. You can either pull away, slowly, or rotate the comb up, slowly. Sometimes easier to just buzz around at different lengths, stepping up or stepping down, and then fade after the heavy lifting is done.
I’ve gotten pretty good at it, but my skills don’t transfer to cutting somebody else’s hair. At all.
One advantage of speaking Spanish. I have a cute gal that comes over to the house, cuts my hair, busts out the vacuum, and cleans up, happily, for $25. I always tip her more.
And no, I have never gotten a ‘happy ending’, but yeah, good material for the spank bank!
This barber talk makes me glad I decided to try those vacuum-cleaner-hair-cut things nearly 20 years ago. :)

re: getting the haircut they think is best vs what you actually want, I've found that (when you're a new customer to them) they ask how you want it, then early in the chit chat, they ask what you do. If you say pilot, you get the pilot haircut regardless of the first part.
If you say, "I'm just working at the upholstery shop until my band takes off" you'll get the Jack White.

This weekend I just drove a few miles to my hair person's house and got my 1-2x a year spring cleaning done. Always great catching up, and just leave the cash on the living room table. Even hung out with her while she was DJ'ing at the radio station the next day, took some portraits, and brought her some yummy leftovers for her and her daughter.
Long-term relationships are also key with hair folks.
