I know you think fat shaming is what is responsible for folks in Japan being slimmer than the US. It's a lot more complicated than that. You're smart enough to know that.

Huh?
More like the High blood pressure (hypertension), High/low HDL cholesterol/high levels of triglycerides (dyslipidemia), Type 2 diabetes, Coronary heart disease, Strokes, Gallbladder disease, Osteoarthritis, Sleep apnea and breathing problems, many types of cancer, low quality of life, mental illness (clinical depression/anxiety/other mental disorders), Body pain and difficulty with physical functioning, and of course, Death.

Ah, but guess obesity has nothing to do with an increase in shared costs, huh? Of course there's also insane pharmaceutical costs, but that's a great topic for another thread.
Exactly. That's wild. I didn't know the averages had gotten THAT high.
Yes. I know it's a lot more complicated than I can say possibly elaborate on sufficiently in an internet forum, but it is what it is. And what it IS, is simply absurd. It's not fat shaming. It's acknowledging that we are REALLY screwed up as a society when it comes to our health. Why is this even remotely controversial?
And maybe we SHOULD bring back fat shaming, because fat acceptance sure as hell hasn't done us any favors. Sorry riser4, but Lizzo is NOT the picture of health and beauty by most logical standards.
An oldie but a goodie from Bill Maher. When he's right, he's right. Don't get too offended, Riser. Maher spittin' truth here:

I see your point, but what about when DOCTORS are being discouraged from addressing the issue. Fat advocacy groups have been pushing harder and harder against doctors on this, as evidenced by numerous articles I've seen over the years. Like this recent WaPo piece:
Yes, doctors can fat-shame. Here’s what to do about it.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/welln...ng-fat-phobia/
W.... T.... F....? So now doctors are expected to tiptoe around this stuff too? The majority of the pieces I've read are upset about how skinny people are treated differently than fat people by their doctors. Well, no shit! When a doctor sees a person with a healthy weight, good blood pressure, great levels on their bloodwork, and overall good vitals, that rules out a LOT. When a doctor sees a morbidly obese person waddle in complaining about shortness of breath and sleep apnea, OF COURSE the doc's going to blame the root issues. But now docs can't expect a routine weight check out of these people? Wow...Quote:

The world was always mad, the volume just got turned up. The heart of all of this is results-based research, and it turns out that making people feel bad (part a:) doesn’t lead to overall great outcomes (part b:) compared to compassion and education. Groups couldn’t organize around obesity before the internet…. Now, though, groups doing what groups do, they seize on part a to the exclusion of part b. And here we are.
Perhaps one thing we can all agree on is banning pharmaceutical ads. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this, but apparently the United States is one of the only countries on the planet that allows Rx TV ads. The other being New Zealand.
"Ask your doctor if Shitrix is right for you. ...may cause uncontrollable seizures, incontinence, excessive flatulation, suicidal tendencies, and most certainly death."
All those disease processes that you listed are the result of no single payer/national healthcare.

Weight check is only relevant for loss or gain. That’s why it’s done. Physicians can tell by looking at you if you’re obese. So the article and headline are published to incite simple minds.

Yes and no. Of course we should be kind to those in public. Can't tell you how many times I've assisted an obese person at the grocery store in their mobility scooter who couldn't reach something or needed a hand maneuvering around something. I'm cool to all. However, with our close friends and family, we talk shit to them BECAUSE we care. Hanging with the boys, it'd be like "Packing on the pounds there, eh buddy? Needa lay off the tacos and donuts for a while." [hardy har har - we all laugh our asses off] But then it'd be like "Yo. We're going to the gym tomorrow. Come with us! We'll walk with you." A little peer pressure can go a long way and I've had countless friends of mine make remarkable progress thanks to buddies razzing them AND supporting them through their goals. Seen them go from fat to marathon runners, competetive road bikers, martial artists, and more. Won't have those fitness goals though if society's telling them "YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL JUST THE WAY YOU ARE!", "You don't need to get on a scale!", "YAAAAAAS QUEEN. You're healthy JUST the way you are!" But then again, this is how dudes operate vs chicks and increasingly our society is becoming more and more faux nice (like how women talk to each other). I mean, 99% of these articles ARE written by chicks. Haha.
Fuck, as soon as I find something I like that is supposed to be ‘healthier’, it goes and tries to kill me. :cussing:

Buuuuuuuuuull shit. Did we have single payer in the US back in the entirety of the 19th and 20th centuries? Yet look at photos of people from then versus now.
It's cuz our country eats like ass. You can blame corn lobbyists et al for this, BUT again, it's something our politicians refuse to acknowledge (prolly cuz they're bought off all the same). We have more medical intervention than ANY country on the planet. We're the most medicated country on the planet. Yet, we're STILL the sickest. By far.
At SOME point, you have to acknowledge personal responsibility should play some role in this. Fat acceptance ain't the way forward to success.

Great point. You're actually spot on. Again, the shit talking AND compassion go hand in hand. I guess people need friends to talk some sense into them. But what if society now dictates we're not allowed to give anybody a hard time anymore? Because that's where we're headed (or already are in many places).
I dunno - I've been taking this wonder-drug for a couple decades, and found about it on a radio ad:

:fmicon:
So do you understand the difference between medical intervention and preventive care? One makes billions while the other costs little and makes nothing. The current system rewards intervention and universal healthcare puts emphasis on preventive care. Simple minds and all.
I was having a conversation with a doc at work the other day. Board certified in OB/Gyn and weight loss medicine. It’s less about pets responsibility than it is about age, gender, socioeconomic status and genetics. Of course you’ve done some real research, right?
