My Tacoma has that, I hated it and turned it off. Reflective signs along the road would trigger it and turn high beams off. In some places here there are a lot of signs so you'd constantly have the high beams going on/off.

On that note, super reflective signs are also annoying. With high beams on, you are pretty much blinded by the reflection and can't see anything but the sign. So maybe there is something to the high beams dimming. Of course when they dim, you can't see much outside of the road prism anyways.

I attended a PK for CIBIE headlight back in the day, the rep had a bunch of lights wired into a suitcase so they could demo the old sealed beam vs aftermarket. With the CIBIE they would shine the lights at your face and sneak the beam pattern up to just under the eye before the pupils would dilate whereas the sealed beams had a bunch of scattered light and the eye reacted way before the beam got anywhere close to the eye,

so the new headlights are way better/ more accurate, of course this assumes the operator actualy dims their lights

I had my driving lights on a switch but i could never get to them fast enough or i forgot so for 50$ I had the auto electric store wire the driving light relay into the high beam switch also with a defeat switch to also turn the driving lights off which worked great

I was thinking about the high beams thing the other day, now that my morning commute is 100% in the dark. Seems like it used to be common courtesy to turn them off as soon as you see a car coming the other direction, and forgetfulness was usually remedied with a quick flash. Also you don't turn them on if you're behind someone?

Now people regularly leave them on (I think it's intentional) until they are within a couple hundred feet, then shut them off. Yeah, that's annoying.

Oh but what I came here to whine about is people registering pets as service animals so they can bring them where they are not wanted. This isn't new, but seems like it's becoming more prevalent.

My in-laws are the latest adopters of the trend and they feel so clever, but they somehow don't see that no one actually believes their terribly behaved aussie in the red vest is a real service animal--it's embarrassing to be out with them and does a huge disservice to the people who actually rely on service animals.

My suby has that but only when the light switch is set to auto, not when they're on headlight setting. Which is useful when I want to be an asshole. Or when the automatic setting keeps turning off the high beams because of light reflected off of road signs, parked cars etc. Nice to have the high beams on donner pass road at night to keep from hitting deer and bears. (Why is deer the plural of deer, but bear gets an s.)

so you get a brief shot of high from way off nobody forgets

a seeing eye dog is a service dog they are very well trained & very valuable, they do a much needed service for a blind person

There are legit service dogs that are not seeing eye dogs. But I do agree with waveshello that some people abuse the service dog concept. That said, I would caution anyone from thinking that it must not be a "real" service dog if the person doesn't have an obvious disability. For ex, someone could be prone to seizures and a dogs might be trained to detect that.

There are service dogs and there are support animals. Each of which are a bit different. Both should have high levels of training and aptitude for whatever role they have.

I know some of the guide dog orgs are calling for changes in the ADA to crack down on fake service animals.

I'm not going to play the hypothetical game with you. I am just pointing out that the notion that the only true service dogs are those that accompany a blind person is completely false. It's as false as assuming that someone with a handicap placard isn't really handicapped/deserving of the placard if they seem "normal" to you.

Sometime in September I was biking up at Alta and came across an older couple looking very out of place on the trail to Catherine. They looked like the were fresh out of church and on the way to brunch at the country club. Lady had a tiny shitty barky nasty dog off leash, no vest, no nothing, and it immediately barked at me and acted all aggressive. I shook my head and told them the sheriff was down on the Albion road and it would be a salty fine if he caught her. I must have been the 10th person to tell her the same thing cause she loudly proclaimed that it wasn't a problem at all since the animal was registered as an emotional support companion or something. I kept pedaling with angry justifications drifting behind me. Fuck her and her entitled ilk, too bad there aren't more coyotes in upper LCC...

My Jeep has auto-sensing high beams and typically lowers the beam quite a bit later than the “norm” when I had to manually turn off the high beams. But, I still think the auto adjust happens before blinding the oncoming car… just “later”.

Edit: maybe that’s what you’re experiencing?

If someone is blasting you with brighter than the sun, don't click your high beams at em early. Wait until the last possible second.

Yup. I've done that and then gotten lit up by a massive light bar. Hit em when there isn't enough time to retaliate, which is what they're really itching to do.
