Some of the cheaper USB C cables are also directional. So even if they fit both ways, the pins are only live on one side.

I must be amazing to you then... Pay, pay, pay.
(Don't seem to last long. I will send you a big padded envelope and you can hook me up, yes?)

Needed to print a practice plan yesterday afternoon, in black-and-white. My printer will not print until I replace the empty yellow ink cartridge.
Somewhere at HP headquarters, engineers were against doing this and some management asshole(s) probably got a bonus for forcing them to implement this "feature."
This "feature" also exists on my Brother printer. It's a fucking conspiracy by Big Ink.
Printers are the fucking worst. I don’t own one, so twice a year I have to go on a grand odyssey to print out one page
Of If I bought one it would be a black and white laser printer so you don’t have to worry about ink drying up or all the color bullshit
Garbage sports statistics. The most TD passes by a left handed quarterback in their first 47 games, stuff like that. They must have some powerful computers to even come up with that stuff. We should be using that computing power to cure cancer.
True. But some manufacturers code an expiry date into the cartridge so even if there is still plenty of toner left and it is printing like normal, the cartridge gets disabled and you can't print until you replace it. Assholes.
That one page per year will get pretty expensive.
I have a canon color inkjet printer from work. The color cartridges run out often but generic ones work on this printer and I can buy a whole box of them on amazon for $10.
The real answer is just print stuff off at work.
If your color runs out you can drip food coloring onto the felt until it stops soaking in. The colors are perfect and almost free. Alternately you can drill a hole in the top of the case and inject it with a syringe. If you drill you need to fill or tape over the hole after. When my kids were small I did this for years. Now I have a B/W laser printer
We have a Brother B/W laser printer that we got when the Mrs. was in grad school, so at least 8 years ago. Other than a couple toner replacements, its needed nothing, and always works *knocks on wood*. I use it very infrequently now, and it kind of surprises me every time when it prints wirelessly without fail.
I don’t think there will be a cure for cancer.

"Boardmo". Just please stop this shit.
Old people who get pissy about names for things, especially if they think it’s new or renaming something they used to call something else, amuses me. How basically cantankerous do you have to be to get upset over words, especially when those words have nothing to do with you?
And for even MORE corporate a-holeness, HP pushed out firmware updates that would block 3rd party ink cartridges. WTF?!
HP outrages printer users with firmware update suddenly bricking third-party ink

Ha ha, totally. One of the recent ones I've noticed here is the Seattle Times has started using the term "atmospheric river" rather than "pineapple express" and people just lose their shit about that.
There was also a big ado last year because the Seattle branch of the Audubon Society voted to change their name to "Birds Connect Seattle" so as to not include a reference to Audubon, who was a slave owner. If you're in that club then you've got the right to voice your opinion, if not how could it possibly have any bearing on your life? Some people pick the dumbest things to care about.
Wtf is A-Bay???
Parents wrote me a check for $200 when I was home, to reimburse me for some of their stuff I paid for. They are in Canada so it's a Cdn$ check. I've cashed these at my local bank in SD many times, they just convert to USD and deposit the amount. Easy.
But my bank was acquired by US Bank last year. And apparently the tellers now communicate all questions to their supervisors via a chat app, so she spent way too long, typing, muttering, and starting at her screen than should be necessary. The word fee was murmured several times.
So their new process is to deposit a foreign currency check at face value, then 3-5 days later they will apply a fee "for the exchange". Fine, makes sense. Then she mentions another fee. More typing. Ah yes, there's a $19 fee if the check bounces. Fair enough. It won't bounce.
More typing and staring. Hmmm.... She now tells me there will be a $40-120 fee to cash the check. You can't tell how much? $40 would be annoying, but $120 would wipe out most of the value of the check. Her manager finally comes out, and also can't tell me how much the fee will actually be. And apparently she can't waive it or do anything about it. "All the banks are doing this now". Wonderful. Fuck all of the banks with a red hot poker.
So I just tore the check up in front of them. I'd rather my parents keep their money than give a chunk of it to the bank.
I’m in a similar situation as you. When we ran into that problem, my parents opened a US dollar account with their bank (CIBC). Now they can transfer money into that account, and then write checks from it that I can cash just like it was coming from any other US bank.
(These checks are usually pretty small - reimbursing for kids birthday presents, and such- so getting hit with foreign processing fees would constitute a large fraction.)
They actually have a USD account, but I'm pretty sure it is not a checking account. We were actually at their bank (RBC) last week and talked to them about this, and writing checks from the USD account was not mentioned as an option.
Parents used to just get a USD money order, which would be cleared by JP Morgan Chase in the US who had a contract with RBC. Apparently due to changed money laundering/terrorism rules in the US, they no longer offer that service so RBC can no longer do USD money orders.
Don't want to drag them through trying to set up a new account. Maybe I can send them an invoice via paypal. If it's something they only have to click on and hit pay it might work. Anything that requires thought or a bit of problem solving ain't gonna happen.
Tickets to Newport Folk Festival went on sale today at 1:00 on the Dice app. I was on there at exactly 1:00, put four tickets in my cart, and then a "Sold Out" notice popped up on the app and the tickets disappeared from my cart. It was 1:00 and maybe fifteen seconds by the time this whole deal had transpired and I was out of luck. I am annoyed. That's bullshit.
I've tried setting up Venmo several times. Can't get their confirmations to work where they send an email or the two small deposits to your bank acct. None of these ever arrive. Parents do have paypal already from when they used ebay in the past, so at least that is set up. I'd have to set venmo up for them myself.
How about cold hard cash? You mentioned “we” were in their bank last week so I’m assuming you were in their presence.
That would be an option if I was still there, and they actually did grab US cash for some other stuff I paid for while I was there. But wrote a check the last day as I left before the bank opened. This had never been an issue before so a check seemed like no problem. Now we know...
Fuck Venmo with a rusty pole. Those fuckers make Zuckerberg look like he’s got your interests at heart. Besides their shitty security/privacy record, it provides too many ways for an older or inattentive user to transfer money to the wrong person which is then unrecoverable.
