Since Covid a lot of houses around here have white lights up year round
Company moved to a new office. Open concept, polished concrete floors, high ceilings. Literally everyone not in upper management repeatedly voiced concerns during the planning process that it would be loud AF, and these concerns were brushed aside. Guess what? It's loud AF! I can perfectly hear conversations happening 100 feet away.
I've seen a few signs up around this year advertising someone who puts up Christmas lights and it struck that this was something I'd never consider outsourcing, although it certainly makes sense. Ladder accidents are prevalent. It still seems wrong somehow to hire someone to put up lights. Do it yourself or don't bother.
Y’all need a white noise system.

That's racist.
This is big business around these parts.
Several of the landscapers have capitalized on the demand to keep their crews busy during the winter (take down in January/Feb too)
I work in the interior design industry and holiday decorating is a decent % of the revenue there too. We bill out ~$175/hour to decorate for the holidays and we have to turn people down
Go on a diet?
Big business, you bet. Driving around Steamboat Springs last Xmas, between the resorts, the enormous condo complexes and large homes, it was incredible how much work went into putting these lights up, to say nothing of the cost of running them. Maybe with led lights it isn’t that costly. Still, blew me away.
Those fugly socks annoy me.

$175 per hour for holiday decorations in a house that will only be occupied for one Christmas week. Fuckkk. There’s too much stupid money in the valley.
Yup, HOA brought in some independent experts and got a number of quotes for each stage of the project. The degredation of stucco and the membrane underneath, and resulting water intrusion and mold issues are well documented here. As I said the building is 45 yrs old. It may not all need to be replaced now, but the membrane doesn't regenerate. So we're left with the option of piecemeal repairs over time or one big fix now. Not only is piecemeal more expensive in the long run but property values will drop if the community gets a reputation for having lots of issues.
Good to know. I'll have to check my policy and see if I have that. Guessing not that specifically.
I bought the place knowing the association was far far below being funded appropriately (only 15% funded 10 yrs ago IIRC) and that an assessment could happen. But there are very few places here near the beach that are affordable and come with a 2-car garage. Value has nearly doubled since I bought, so I don't have a lot to complain about. Monthly dues have already gone from $300 to $550 since I bought. They'll have to go higher than that to get us funded, but doing this project will allow them to fund the reserve rather than 100% go to pay for repairs like they've been doing the last year. Reserve is at just 9% right now. Monthly fees should have been raised a long time ago.
Considering these are the same people who post useless or retarded shit on Nextdoor constantly it shouldn't be eye opening at all. Lots of stupid out there.
I've got a number of bags and clothing with broken zippers that are otherwise good. Probably cost as much to replace the zipper as buy a new item. Annoying.
I raise you all the people on Trax tonight wearing their pants around their thighs. How do you walk in either?
$50 +/- repair cost vs $200-$300 ++ replacement costs may at least keep more stuff out of the landfill....or at least less clutter.
The other annoying and hypocritical component is when companies like Outdoor Research play the 'Green & Responsible card', ie:
But then make products with 'planned obsolescence', like zippers that break on garments that could last for decades if cared for properly with little effort. Rather than repairing their crap like Patagonia, they replace them with another garment with the same crappy zipper.Quote:
This piece is made with 100% recycled polyester and features responsibly sourced 700+ fill power-down insulation.....
Rather than waiting for the above (3-4 weeks), I did eat my words and ordered a Black Diamond First Light Hybrid. The Black Diamond zippers are in another league compared to Outdoor Research. I still will repair the zipper on the 2nd OR jacket and use it or give it to someone.
Yeah, I suppose it shouldn't be surprising. The super rich are living in a world I can barely comprehend.
...and those shoes Norseman posted. WTF? Honestly it looks exactly when a five year old puts on their dad's shoes. How many sizes too big do you think those are?
Password complexity annoys me. Why do we need 8 characters with symbols, caps etc? Are they really worried someone will crack my code if it’s just a 4 digit PIN?
I'm a fan of YKK's Vislon, resin teeth in a bigger gauge. Haven't had any break or skip so far unlike the watertight zips- can't stand those. Don't have to hold jacket taught when zipping with the Vislon style. Water seepage has never been an issue where I live & the watertight ones to me are a PITA as they start to age, the coating dries up and causes zipper to snag.
I have 20+ y/o jackets and fleece tops made in the USA from TNF and Pata that use the Vislon zips- still perfect to this day.

I had no idea there was so much to know about zippers! :)
Are pedestrian crosswalks now the playing fields for a game of chicken between pedestrians and cars?
Around here pedestrians won't even break stride entering crosswalks in order to test the ABS systems of cars.
