My wife brings up the fact that she's a nurse in every conversation. I on the other hand only bring up my profession on the internet.
I’d miss out on some good stories if my friends never talked about work. Ski and ride with a bunch of folks in the auto business. Lots of good “Customer states” tales that bring a laugh.
I have noticed doctors especialy old doctors always refer to nurses especiay old nurses as " nurse so and so "
I don’t tell anyone I’m a billionaire playboy philanthropist. Always seemed a bit crass to mention it.
I find it odd that the thing you spend a good percentage of if not the majority of your waking hours doing isn’t worth sharing or inquiring about. It’s interesting to know how you spend your days; some people do cool shit. Some really interesting people do boring shit. The local economy has all kinds of weird nooks and crannies I never knew existed.
I don’t really talk about my day to day much, and I’ll rarely actually share my job title or employer name, but I’ll typically share the industry I work in in a getting-to-know-you type setting and I’ll absolutely dive into what you do, how it matters, and what you love/hate about it if you’re willing. If conversation wanders into things I work on directly I might share more of my own specifics just to establish context. If I’m hanging out with work people outside of work I’ll talk about work stuff if they wanna, but rarely bring it up.
I think there are interesting work stories to talk about from time to time, but I think most of us are talking about those for whom mentioning their job comes right after telling someone their name. It's usually their first and most dominant discussion topic.

I think we're talking past each other. You sound like you're talking about an interaction with someone you don't know well, someone you met at a party. Sure, then, work is a fair subject because it gives you something to talk about, and it helps you find out more about the other person. But my close friends don't think I am a narcissist because I don't know what kind of engineering they do, anymore than I think they are a narcissist because they know nothing about the legal work I do. We talk about stuff like biking and skiing and music and art and food. What we're doing in our jobs isn't generally a topic of discussion (I do talk shop with my close lawyer friends occasionally, because we speak the same language and because we may have insights that are useful, but even then, only when I have something significant to share).Quote:
