I think we're talking past each other. You sound like you're talking about an interaction with someone you don't know well, someone you met at a party. Sure, then, work is a fair subject because it gives you something to talk about, and it helps you find out more about the other person. But my close friends don't think I am a narcissist because I don't know what kind of engineering they do, anymore than I think they are a narcissist because they know nothing about the legal work I do. We talk about stuff like biking and skiing and music and art and food. What we're doing in our jobs isn't generally a topic of discussion (I do talk shop with my close lawyer friends occasionally, because we speak the same language and because we may have insights that are useful, but even then, only when I have something significant to share).
