Shit that annoys you

Houses with only one bathroom annoy me. We had two great rentals in a row that we would have happily kept longer except they only had one shitter. And there a few houses we didn't buy because of that. Three toilets for five people, when they are all home isn't enough. Plus no backup for when one goes down.

They make a gasket fitting for this application. When I think Fernco its basically a outside sleeve that is tightened with 2 hose clamps?

The plus side is their Infinite Warranty. I've had multiple Outdoor Research items replaced due to zipper fails, but I can't get my head around how replacing decent garments (vs making repairs) because their crappy zippers fail is a good business model. Not to mention waiting for one to break at the most inopportune moment, location or situation. What a waste.

Edit: I'm having the zipper replaced on a mid-puffy that broke vs getting it replaced for $50. It's a versatile layer and in good shape. I might do the same on the above jacket even if the warranty claim comes through.

Closet (or garden shed), a 5gallon bucket, the seat off the nonfunctional commode, and a bale of peat = composting toilet. Problem solved.

Right. So how do I cut the bad stuff out without cutting the joist below it? How do I get the 2 layers of ancient tile up? How do I cut the existing floor back where it's under the wall tiles?.... So much I don't know.

I've gotten good enough at plumbing that I'm not too worried about that part but I also don't know how bad that drain pipe has gotten in the 10 or so years since I "fixed" it.

OR didn't make those zippers, YKK did. OR just uses them, along with numerous other outdoor companies. It's the cheap YKK, they do make better zippers than most but the softgood companies just can't help themselves but use the cheapest reverse-coil model for their products to keep the price down. I'm not a fan of that zipper and will not buy jackets, pants or sweaters that use them; they just don't last.

Assuming you don't understand how contractors roll. A. I'm getting cash outta the gun safe, not guns. Sometimes if you need a bit of casual labor or a favor done, paying in cash (green money) is appreciated. B. The term handyman is usually reserved for lesser skilled and lesser payed. So if you want to call it handywork, no problem. But the bill will reflected trained, experienced, insured, licensed, tradesman.

Tile comes up with a wrecking bar pretty easy, especially if the underneath is rotten. You'll probably have to look up how to carefully remove the first row of wall tile. Find the joists from underneath and drill up where you are certain there is blank floor space on top then mark safe cut lines. You can get close enough to the joist to then see it and pry up the remaining bits of sub floor. You'll want an oscillating tool and a bunch of blades. For long cuts you can use your skil saw. Adjust the blade depth. If you have any small pipes that have floor all around and you don't want to redo those pipes, do what I did with my gas line. Cut a shape around the pipe and let that fall down below your floor. My shape will be there until the next owners decide to deal with it. I am most definitely a hack. And while I did one floor repair under the washer, I ended up paying to have two bathrooms fully remodeled because they needed everything. I highly recommend splitting the job up and hiring a plumber, or a tile guy, or whatever you're not comfortable doing. But go direct. You're the contractor.

That's a spec that isn't obvious on any product. How does the consumer find out which zipper grade is used by a company or on a garment? How about Black Diamond First Light?

Even the expensive "waterproof" YKKs can fail (looking at you Arcteryx)

My gripe with OR is their size is different between similar items, like a medium goretex shell is the same size as a large softshell. They've had some overall size creep over the years (as have most brands) too.

When I showed up Monday for my appt, the hospital informed me I had been rescheduled but they failed to tell be when they made the switch. 2 days of fasting and bowel cleansing this week has me super cranky...
