You just described Fred Meyer to a T (local chain that started in PDX, recently acquired by Kroger)

Hey, if you happen to need a new couch, a TV, gallon of milk and a steak, snow boots, a baby crib, Carhart jacket and a bag of mulch, no better place than Fred Meyer.

So, a slightly more expensive Wal-Mart, really.
Has anyone been to Winco since the pandemic? Do they still have all of the bulk bins?
I'd be lying if I said I haven't bought a Christmas tree from Freddies.
The Fred Meyer I shop at has raised their prices probably twice as fast as other stores near me. It’s barely cheaper than the Safeway and New Seasons now.
Winco has the bulk bins still I think.
I seem to remember Fred Meyer having a really good seafood market. But that was 20 years ago in B-ham. Maybe it has changed, or my standards were low. Either is possible.
FMs seem to vary significantly depending on the neighborhood they are in.
Mine has a Boarshead deli, but I won’t buy anything from the seafood and meat section. Produce is pretty decent.
I highly recommend the Thriftway in John Day for weird smells, lack of selection, expired items and high prices.
I’d be lying if I said I haven’t bought a Christmas tree from Whole Foods*.
*Before Amazon acquired them, they used to run a Thanksgiving weekend sale 1/2 off on 8-9’ fraser firs. Quality was great and couldn’t be beat for $35. It was a classic loss leader and the subsequent grocery bill more than wiped out that savings.
The Fred Meyer on SE Hawthorne came with that extra bonus of being relentlessly hassled going in and leaving by people wanting you to sign their petition for increasingly outlandish causes, which was always nice.
Meijer is closer to a Super Wal-Mart than a grocery store. You can find just about anything there.
Kroger being the biggest grocer in the US (behind the Dollar stores and Walmarts which IMHO aren't really its competitors) has wildly inconsistent offerings. There's one of its "Fresh Fare" concepts by us that has a Murray's cheese shop, great wine shop and as much if not more of its Simple Truth organic offerings than some Whole Foods' 365 organic. Then there's the Krogers you'd go to if you want to get stabbed, or buy loose cigs, which seems to be about every third one of them anymore.
Ya never know on a given day if you're gonna say to yourself, "self, let's go see if we can go get stabbed or buy some loose cigarettes.". So its handy knowing the option exists.
Don't plan on buying a cartful of groceries at the Alhambra Safeway in Sacramento because the homeless people have taken all the carts.
I've never bought a Christmas tree
Sometimes we'll end up at 2 or 3 markets in a day, one has this and the other has that. Buying fish is mostly a crapshoot but Trader Joe's for salmon, Stew Leonard's for shellfish and other species are mixed. Produce at TJs or Stews and most regular stuff and paper goods at Stop & Shop but then we have to go to Shop Rite for Fresh Step dog food. It ends up being a good way to get my step count up. lol
Security guy at the door makes you dig out the receipt for the loaf of bread you bought, but didn’t bag at the register, then you have to kindly inform the 19 year old kid in the pink hi-vis vest that no, you don’t want to sign the petition to stop Nestle from clubbing baby bald eagles around their dams, even though yes you agree it’s bad, but that it’s just raining and it’s dinner time and now my eight dollar loaf of bread is soggy cause I didn’t spend the 10 cents on a bag at the register.
(This may or may not be a close to true story about my last time at the Hawthorne FM)
I do not stop for receipt checks - fuck that
I do what I want

I walk out, pushing my cart.
I don’t know what or who that is
